The nForce2, as it is called, will contain several features not found in the current line of nForce chipsets, and a few unexpected surprises. First a brief history of nForce is in order. NVIDIA released its nForce series of chipsets to gain market share and realize another venue for revenue. NVIDIA's chipset knowledge gained from developing the chipset on the XBox, and its familiarity with graphics enabled it to entice many motherboard manufacturers, OEMs, and even consumers. Today, the computer market has dried up, and NVIDIA must realize new revenue streams, and by taking a bigger piece of the chipset pie, which Intel and VIA both claim a high chunk of, they may increase their bottom line. lower end model, very similar to the nForce2, except lacking this chip. Extractions: UMBPCI extends the HIMEM.SYS of DOS or Win95/98 by the function 'Request XMS UMB' (These are the 240 Bytes which stay in memory). That's the same thing that EMM386 does, if you load it with the parameter 'noems' or 'ram'. UMBPCI makes UMBs from disabled memory that is intended as Shadow-RAM. UMBPCI enables this memory and disables its write protection. EMM386 works on all machines with 386 cpu or higher and provides usually more UMBs than UMBPCI but it creates the UMBs from the computer's physical XMS (eXtended Memory Specifications) by virtually remapping XMS to the upper memory area using the Memory Management Unit (MMU) of 386 and higher CPUs. It needs an additional 150 KB of XMS, 4 KB of low memory and 7 KB of UMA (Upper Memory Area) when loaded, and it also switches the CPU into "protected mode" (slower) because it's necessary to use the MMU. DOS then runs in virtual 8086 machine (V86 mode):

The PM890 will need to battle with Intel his Grantsdale-G which has Intel Extreme Graphics 3. The PM890 has an integrated UniChrome 3 graphical solution with DirectX9 capabilities. This chipset has no ECC support. It is also expected in Q1 2004. For the AMD64 computers VIA is planning to offer its K8T890 providing 1GHz HyperTransport bus, PEG x16 graphics and Ultra V-Link to attach VT8237 or VT8239 I/O controller. The K8M890 will provide the same capabilities in addition to UniChrome 3 graphics core with DirectX 9.0 support. The K8M890 will only support VIA VT8239 though, as the report claims.
