Extractions: PC Hardware for High-Performance Network Experiments Last Updated Jan 17, 1997. Still some obsolete information, though. This page holds a collection of opinions, and the occasional fact, developed while trying to convince some high-end PC's to be useful as networking research platforms. Our experiments cover PC's used both as hosts and IP routers. For hosts, our interest is primarily in human-communication capabilties - video, audio, and interactive graphics, rather than the more traditional data throughput measures. Our Fast PC Routers are experimental platforms designed for whizzo performance and flexibility in an experimental testbed environment. This page is colored by our using BSD-derived Unix as the basic operating system environment. Some things would look very different from a Windows perspective. More on that at a later date. General Information Motherboards and PCI Chipsets ATM Interfaces Fast Ethernet Controllers T1 Interface Cards ... Configurations The advent of the PCI bus has finally brought reasonable I/O capabilities to the PC world. Unfortunately, your choice of motherboard and PCI chipset can make a huge difference in performance for typical networked applications. This is doubly true because the "PCI chipset" manages the CPU's connection with system memory, as well as controlling and arbitrating the PCI bus. The first thing everyone hears about the PCI bus is that it has 132MB/s of I/O bandwidth. This fact is of almost no relevance to network system designers. The performance actually achieved by a PCI-bus computer depends on a number of more subtle factors. Among these are:

If the CPU is the brain of your PC, the chipset is its heart. It controls the flow of bits that travel between the CPU, system memory, and the motherboard bus. Efficient data transfers, fast expansion bus support, and advanced power management features are just a few of the things the system chipset is reponsible for.

Apparently, the Markham, Ontario-based ATI Technologies has two core-logic products in the works for AMD64 platform the RS480 with DirectX 9.0 integrated graphics as well as discrete RX480. There is also ATI IXP400 South Bridge to come, according to the slides published by this web-site.

Towards end of this month, Intel is going to cut the prices of the Pentium 4 processors "Willamette" cores by ~US$30 for each speed grade. Intel is also expected to resolve the current shortage of P4 processors with increasing production capacity and currently, five of Intels fabs have entered 0.13-micron process production of the P4 "Northwood". Therefore, what we can expect in this quarter is the increasing demand for Pentium 4 processors for either the P4 "Northwood" or the cheaper 0.18 micron P4 "Willamette" and the wide availability of motherboards for the Pentium 4 processors. Apart from the Intel 845A3 SDRAM and 850 RDRAM based chipsets boards, there are newer and more interesting chipsets from VIA, SiS, ALi and Intel. We are going to take a close look at all the DDR chipsets offering from ALi, Intel, SiS and VIA apart from the current SDRAM and RDRAM based chipsets, i845A3 and i850.

Extractions: Small Form Factor systems, SiS chipsets By: Sander Sassen Small form factor PCs are hot, ever since Shuttle launched their first SFF, weve seen other manufacturers jump into the game and produce their own version of a small form factor PC. Naturally Computex is a great opportunity for many manufacturers to launch their new SFF, and weve seen a wide variety of SFFs, some with excellent and innovative features, others just a rehash of what Shuttle has brought to the market before. To pick a few that were noteworthy, MSIs new MegaPC as it featured a new FTD display and an overall feature set upgrade, ECSs Mini PC series with detachable color front, and last, but certainly not least, Iwills ZPC 64 where we already reported on yesterday and which simply packs the most punch per cubic inch.

The spec modification is pretty strange, as the core-logic sets code-named Tumwater and Lindenhurst are not officially unveiled yet. The yet unannounced E7520, E7320 and E7525 MCH chips have undergone certain changes that are reflected in C2 stepping, the version of the chips that is more mature compared to the C1 presumably available now at hands of mainboard producers. The C2 revision is pin-to-pin compatible with the C1 and does not require any regression testing or mainboard re-design, according to the information spread among Intels partners on Friday. Intel will release its Lindenhurst chipset also known as E7520 for dual-way server applications powered by code-named Xeon Nocona and eventually Irwindale processors in the third quarter of the year, according to the most recent plans of the chip giant revealed by unofficial sources. The chipsets were also meant to support the now-canned
