Extractions: Updated on June 26th, 1998 Introduction In the past, at the time of the first PCs, the motherboard was formed by small integrated circuits. For each circuit in the personal computer there really was an integrated circuit in the motherboard that carried out that function. For example, there was an interrupt controller, a DMA controller, a timer and so on (curiosity: those circuits were, respectively, the 8259, 8237 and 8253). Figure 1: In the past it was necessary to have many circuits to build a motherboard. As time went by, the motherboard tended to have more and more chips. Luckily, the chip manufacturers managed to gather in few circuits what, in the past, demanded many circuits to obtain the same function. For example, all the existing chips in the PC XT former motherboard (Figure 1) are nowadays found in a single circuit, called

Extractions: [Jan-08-99] In a motherboard there are several support circuits generically called as chipset. The chipset is the heart of the motherboard and defines several factors such as the performance, the maximum amount of memory, and much more. There are in the market several chipset manufacturers, among them Ali, SiS and Via. Those manufacturers have no relations whatsoever with the motherboard manufacturer. For example, a motherboard equipped with the chipset 440LX doesnt necessarily have to be manufactured by Intel, though Intel also makes motherboards. A confusing issue is that many guys call a motherboard by its chipset, and a motherboard equipped with an Intel chipset is called as an Intel motherboard. This naming is wrong, as most likely this motherboard was not manufactured by Intel. There are several motherboard manufacturers in the market, such as Abit, Asus, Fic, Soyo, Alton, QDI, PC-Chips, Biostar, Zida among others. Even the unidentified motherboards were obviously produced by some manufacturer. If you dont know the make of your motherboard, use the program CTBios available for download from http://www.gabrieltorres.com.

If the CPU is the brain of your PC, the chipset is its heart. It controls the flow of bits that travel between the CPU, system memory, and the motherboard bus. Efficient data transfers, fast expansion bus support, and advanced power management features are just a few of the things the system chipset is reponsible for.

Extractions: We first reported about VIAs problems with PCI in early December 2001. When combined with a VIA-board, ATA/133 adaptors and fast SCSI cards can not live up to their performance expectations. In January 2002 VIAs first patch appeared on the firms support website , aimed at users of Promise cards. Of course we checked if this patch really helps and maybe solves problems with other cards. VIAs problems with its PCI implementation surfaced with the move to Ultra-ATA/133. The maximum speed of the interface here increases to a theoretical maximum of 133 MBytes/s. Currently, Maxtor is also the only vendor to actually ship these drives, named DiamondMax D540X and D740X. To fully use the speed of the interface of these drives, companies like

Extractions: PCI Latency Patch It was not VIA, but independent programmer George Breese of Networking Resources from New York who first came up with a patch for some of VIAs problems with the PCI bus. George often posts in the independent forums at VIAHardware , who also offer the patch as a direct download Please note: This is not an "official" patch supplied by VIA or any motherboard manufacturer. You may use it at your own risk. To date, we could not verify if there are any stability issues implied through longer burst cycles. However, we did not see any crashes or incompatibilities after applying this patch. But, taking its severe modifications into account, this is not completely impossible. You should read the files included in the download before going any further. The patch deals with PCI Latency, among other things. This PCI Latency sets the number of cycles, that one PCI-Busmaster-Device can request the bus for exclusive use, before releasing it. This minimum amount of clock cycles is set, so PCI performance will not decrease too much, if burst transfers are interrupted too often. On the other hand, the latency timer also prevents one device from making exclusive use of the bus for too long. After the PCI latency during one burst has passed, every other device can request usage of the bus. The burst is then cancelled immediately.

Extractions: There are three workaround options: 1. Switch the motherboard BIOS back to "legacy ATA mode" (parallel ATA = PATA). Complete a Linux installation. Fetch or build a kernel with support for your chipset. Switch the BIOS setting back. (Potential catch: It's claimed that Dell Optiplex GX270 and Dell Precision Workstation 360 desktop units, using Intel ICH5 SATA chipsets, don't support switching to legacy ATA mode. This might be true of some others.) 2. Rebuild your installer using a custom 2.4.x kernel incorporating Jeff Garzik's libata driver or whatever else is required. (As of kernel 2.4.24, the official 2.4 kernel didn't include that driver. But 2.6.x does. libata is highly desirable since it supports many additional chipsets, and gives a ~10M/s speed boost to others. Note: This speed claim is based on some claims on the Linux kernel mailing list about libata performance compared to that of the stock, quite slow 2.4.x kernel ATA driver. Whether you would ever actually observe such an improvement depends on many factors including physical read-speed limits of your ATA hard drives.) 3. Temporarily add a regular ATA ("IDE") drive
