Extractions: The Preparatory Office of the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy is situated by the side of the Ssu-fen brook in Academia Sinica. At present it has 17 research fellows and more than one hundred and twenty thousand holdings in its library collection. We aim to advance the study of Chinese literature and philosophy, and to lay the groundwork for the establishment of the Institute. We recruit researchers that specialize in the following five fields: classical Chinese literature, modern Chinese literature, Confucian classics, Chinese philosophy, and comparative philosophy. It also sponsors collaborative research projects and provides a forum of intellectual exchange for scholars in Taiwan and abroad. The establishment of this office began in 1988, when Dr. Ting Pang-hsin and 15 other members of Academia Sinica proposed to set up the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy. As the proposal was well received, Professor Wu Hung-i of National Taiwan University was invited both to chair the Advisory Committee and to head the Preparatory Office in the fall of 1989. The office began to operate in March 1990. In July 1992, Professor Wu resigned from both posts for health reasons. Dr. Ting Pang-hsin chaired the Advisory Committee from 1992 to 1995; Professor Tu Wei-ming was later appointed the new chairman of the Committee. Professor Tai Lian-chang, a member of the Advisory Committee since 1989, assumed the directorship of the Preparatory Office in 1992. He has headed the Office ever since.

Extractions: In its commitment to the integral vision of the Institute, the Philosophy and Religion program values the spiritual dimensions of knowledge and inquiry. Because we consider spirituality, in its broadest sense, as essential to human wholeness, the program constitutes a unique academic and professional setting for the study of philosophy and religion at the graduate level. The Philosophy and Religion course of study, leading to a Ph.D. in Humanities, includes three specializations: Asian and Comparative Studies Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness ; and Women's Spirituality . The three specializations have distinct orientations but collaborate closely to create a multidisciplinary, integral approach to the study of philosophy, religion, and spiritual traditions. This collaboration allows creative interplay and dialogue among the various constituencies of the CIIS learning community. Each of the three specializations is designed around area studies that include major schools and traditions, theory and method, classic texts, practices and disciplines, sociocultural issues, and language studies. The Asian and Comparative Studies curriculum offers a wide range of options for the study of spiritual and philosophical viewpoints while providing for in-depth courses in Asian or comparative studies. Students gain an understanding of philosophical and religious thought which is deepened by experiential involvement, an important adjunct to intellectual understanding. Areas of inquiry include Hinduism, Buddhism, and Chinese philosophy.

Extractions: Economics Psychology ... printable version The Philosophy and Religion Department invites and provokes students to examine themselves and the world in ever more comprehensive ways, as well as to look at the most fundamental aspects of human reasoning and discourse. The Department also continues the Colleges heritage of insisting that examination of the religious dimensions of human existence is essential to a liberal arts education; all religion courses are taught in a non-sectarian manner. The Department offers a major and a minor both in philosophy and in religion. A major in philosophy provides excellent preparation for graduate work in law, ethics, religion, philosophy and other fields in which reasoning and argumentation skills or the ability to work at a high level of abstraction are important. A major in religion is useful for those desiring to pursue a church-related vocation or as preparation for graduate work in any aspect of academic religious studies. In addition, a major or minor in either religion or philosophy can serve as an excellent complement to other aspects of ones liberal arts education. As a result, double majors are common, with recent graduates successfully combining either philosophy or religion with fields as diverse as biology, history, music, chemistry, English or political science. The Department encourages such creative combinations. Internships in religion or philosophy often are cross-disciplinary with another field.

Religion And Philosophy In China religion and philosophy in China. TAOISM Along with Buddhism, Taoism casts prominent themes in chinese religious and philosophical thought. http://www.citsusa.com/religion.html
Extractions: Religion and Philosophy in China - Buddhism - Taoism - Islam - Christianity - Judaism - Confucianism Nearly all of the world's great religions have a past and a present in China. Freedom of religious beliefs is China's official policy on religion. The overwhelming majority of the Chinese population are non-religious, but Buddhism, Taoism, Islam and Christianity are practiced by a considerable portion of the people. BUDDHISM: Buddhism spread to China during the 2nd century AD, and has had a considerable influence on Chinese thought, art and culture - even though only a fraction of the population have accepted Buddhism as their religion. Famed age-old monasteries throughout the country are well-maintained as tourist attractions, in addition to their role as places for religious practice. The most notable monasteries are found in the shadows of the four Buddhist Holy Mountains: Mt. Wutai in Shanxi Province, Mt Putuo in Zhejiang Province, Mt. Jiuhua in Anhui Province and Mt. Emei in Sichuan Province. TAOISM: Along with Buddhism, Taoism casts prominent themes in Chinese religious and philosophical thought. As the only truly indigenous Chinese religion, Taoism was founded 1,800 years ago. Its thought is based on the ideas recorded in the classic book -Dao De Jing-, said to be authored by Taoism's major proponent, Lao Zi, in the 6th century BC.

Many of these contrast dramatically with long-held Western beliefs, key among them the insistence on the comingling of rational thought with the emotions and motives. Focusing on the Maoist period (1940s through 1976), Munro reveals convergence between Confucian and Maoist theories of mind, and considers their application in both education and the practice of modern government. The very culture takes from the writings of Confucius, Mencius and Buddha. Nearly two thirds of the population looks to one of these in everyday life decisions for guidance. The teachings of Feng Shui dictate the layout and design of every major city in China and the surrounding area. Much of what is taught today as philosophy around the world comes from 2500 year old manuscripts written in Chinese and translated into every major language. More than a quarter of the earth's population practices Buddhism as its major religion. In the sections below, much of what is regarded as the basis for these philosophies and religions will be discussed. Philosophy Section a01- Introduction
