Extractions: Hungarian Language Course Hungarian is an agglutinative language, meaning that it relies heavily on suffixes and prefixes. The grammar is seemingly complex, yet there is no gender, a feature that most English speakers grapple with when learning other European languages. Hungarian does use the Roman alphabet however, and after learning a few simple rules one can easily read Hungarian. Pronunciation is also very easy, especially compared to other neighboring languages like Czech, German, and Russian. INDONESIAN
Extractions: In the spoken Chinese language, tone as well as words communicates meaning. The Chinese languages use a writing system made up of symbols, called characters, rather than letters; each character has its own meaning. Chinese names are made up of several characters. A name in Chinese characters can be rewritten as a word with letters of the English alphabet. Then we can pronounce the Chinese name and figure out what it means.

Storytellers on Tour Have students practice retelling folktales in their classroom. When students feel confident, teams of three or four students at a time can then take their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert. If older students are sent to the younger grades, ask the younger grades to thank the storytellers with drawings inspired by their stories. 1001 Nights Festival This is a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. Stories could be selected from the Tales of the Arabian Nights and told in this fashion, as in the style of Shahrazad, its great storyteller. According to legend, she told stories in this way to a sultan for 1001 nights, which is why the stories of the Arabian Nights is also called "1001 Nights." A Picture is Worth 1000 Words A class selects a classical painting. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. The paragraph is then sent on to another class which reads the first paragraph and adds on another. The process is repeated including as many classes as possible until the tale seems finished. All the classes then gather to hear the result of their group effort read out loud and to see the painting, that inspired the story.

Extractions: Xiaoxi is a newsletter designed to allow teachers involved in secondary level Chinese language education to exchange opinions and information. Since 1999, TJF has been publishing Xiaoxi quarterly. Though small in size, it offers a place for ideas to flow. It was our hope that, by bringing together the ideas of individual teachers who support secondary level Chinese language education, these varied "currents" would coalesce into a great river, and hence we named it "Xiaoxi," which means "little ravine." We want Xiaoxi to be a forum filled with information and ideas, where everyone can share their experiences and wisdom concerning secondary level Chinese language education.

Included: Activities for younger and older students, and links to valuable teaching resources! China, a country about the same size as the United States, is located on the continent of Asia. Its eastern border, comprising more than 7,000 miles of coastline, abuts the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea. In addition, its land borders 14 other countries. The world's most populous nation, with 1.2 billion people, China consists of 23 provinces and several autonomous regions including, most recently, Hong Kong. Ruled by emperors for more than 3000 years and by Communism for nearly 50 years, China has often been criticized for its widespread repression of personal freedom. But even the complexity of its geography and politics are overshadowed by the richness of its culture and history.
