The Speak Dialect HomePage Essay on how the government propaganda and campaigns have almost killed chinese dialects in Singapore. http://sunflower.singnet.com.sg/~bluesky/dialect.html
Extractions: Welcome to Government propaganda and campaigns have almost killed Chinese dialects in Singapore. However, our dialects are what links us to our roots. Are you going let hundreds or even thousands of years of your culture go down the drain because someone up there wants you to speak Mandarin? I am trying to collect a set of links to websites discussing the various dialects. As a Hakka (and proud of it), I have started off with links to Hakka websites. If you know of any other Hokkien, Cantonese etc websites, please email me. The Speak Dialect Campaign is not to prevent the use and learning of Mandarin. In the early part of this century, it was still possible to learn Cantonese or even Hakka in schools. One of my grandmothers read Chinese newspapers in Hakka. However, since the imposition of Mandarin as the PuTongHua in China, the easiest way to learn to read and write Chinese (in South-East Asia) is to learn it in Mandarin. The aim of this campaign is to counter at least two untruths about the Speak Mandarin Campaign in Singapore. Mandarin is our mothertongue

Extractions: 'PEOPLE ACKNOWLEDGE ARTISTIC LICENSE; I EMBRACE CULTURAL LICENSE.' Since moving to the United States from China in 1982, the composer Bright Sheng has steadily built a world reputation for his fusion of Eastern and Western musical styles. Sheng's gifts of adaptability and openness were nurtured and steeled in his youth, as he struggled to maintain his passion for music in the anti-cultural climate of the Cultural Revolution . At Queens College, the City University and Columbia, his main teachers were Leonard Bernstein, Chou WenChung and George Perie. Sheng's one-act opera The Song of Majnun with librettist Andrew Porter was recorded on the Delos label by the Houston Grand Opera. His discography also includes a first runner-up for the 1989 Pulitzer Prize, H'UN (Laceration): In Memoriam 1966-1976 , an orchestral portrait depicting the crimes and losses inflicted by the Cultural Revolution (New World label), and Two Folk Songs From Qinghai (Kock International). He was again first runner-up for the Pulitzer in 1991 for Four Movements for Piano Trio. Michigan Today
