Extractions: OGALLALA AQUIFER Ninety-five percent of the United States' fresh water is underground. As farmers in the Texan High Plains pump groundwater faster than rain replenishes it, the water tables are dropping. North America's largest aquifer, the Ogallala, is being depleted at a rate of 12 billion cubic metres (bcm) a year. Total depletion to date amounts to some 325 bcm, a volume equal to the annual flow of 18 Colorado Rivers. The Ogallala stretches from Texas to South Dakota, and waters one fifth of US irrigated land. Many farmers in the High Plains are now turning away from irrigated agriculture, as they become aware of the hazards of overpumping, and realise water is not in endless supply. Back to top MEXICO CITY Mexico city is sinking because of the amount of water being pumped out from beneath its foundations. One of the largest and most populous cities in the world, it was once a lush land of lakes. But over the last 500 years the lakes have been drained and the surrounding forests chopped down. As the city grew in size, the water problem magnified. With no adequate drainage system, today rainwater mixes with sewage and is used for irrigation. The city is now at serious risk of running out of clean water. An estimated 40% of the city's water is lost through leaky pipes built at the turn of the century.
Extractions: The Institute pursues innovative research concerning the pathogenesis of the AIDS virus, the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and the dynamics of the epidemic. More importantly, the Institute has translated this research into health care solutions for resource-poor populations in the United States, and especially in Africa and Asia. In fact, with expanded domestic efforts now covering much of the public health landscape for the epidemic in the United States, the focus of the Harvard AIDS Institute is on its specific international partnerships that create strong, on-the-ground efforts with specific countries affected by the epidemic. Tanzania: Tanzania has been a major African site for Harvard-sponsored nutritional intervention studies, and through clinical trails the widest range of HIV subtypes discovered in any African country has been identified in Tanzania. Currently, more than 1,500 mother-infant pairs have completed intervention trials in the country. Studies are now expanding to northern Tanzania to address HIV/AIDS in rural communities and small hospitals. Thailand:

Extractions: Only a short time aft er enduring th e Great Fire of 1871, Chicagoans realized what a unique opportunity the destruction had offered them. Residents, politicians and developers immediately set about rebuilding a bigger and better Chicago. In the years following the fire, Chicago showed an ability to attract wealthy investors, ambitious architects, and new businesses. These factors as well as its central location and large number of railroad terminals made it a frontrunner in the competition to host a Permanent Exposition in Honor of the Four Hundredth Anniversary of the Discovery of America. On February 25, 1890, Congress selected Chicago as the host city for the Worlds Columbian Exposition. Chicago had seen an influx of top architects looking to ply their trade in a revitalized city. The fire had swept away old wooden structures and emphasized the importance of fire safe construction. Skyscrapers with their iron and steel skeletons were one of the many innovations employed by architects such as Daniel Burnham. Burnham and his partner John Root earned fortunes and great reputations by applying the latest construction and design techniques required by new building codes and fire limits. The planners of the 1893 Worlds Fair gave Burnham the job of chief of construction.
