Let's skip ahead a few hours, past his encounters with immigration officials of both countries and an hour and a half of bouncing along dirt roads between them, past the catamaran ride on Lago Todos Dos Santos from Peulla to the black sand beaches of Petrohue. We're finally on the last leg of the lake crossing, a much smoother bus ride from Petrohue to Puerto Varas. Eleven hours into the day's trip, I was less than enthused by a stop at Petrohue Falls. All I wanted was to get to my hotel and crash. Besides, after Iguassu how impressed could I be? But these falls were worth the delay. What they lacked in vertical splendor they more than made up in the sheer force of rushing water. The falls also provided me with the best view yet of the Osorno Volcano, inactive these last 150 years but still a mesmerizing sight. I finally arrived in Puerto Varas, a hamlet of 30,000 on the edge of Lake Llanquihue. Once again I thanked the gods of banking and networking. How did travelers survive before the worldwide ATM network gave us access to our money any time and nearly anywhere? And then I enjoyed the view from my window of the lake and that magnificent volcano. It was startling to be in a place with air so clear; Osorno was able to dominate my view and my thoughts from hundreds of kilometers away.

Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America. For anyone who has ever been fascinated by geography, the long, impossibly thin line of Chile has always produced a tiny moment of astonishment. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as that from San Francisco to New York, or Edinburgh to Baghdad. At the same time, its width never exceeds 240 km (150 mi), making the country more than eighteen times longer than its widest point. In the center of the country, however, is a long and expansive river valley, a five hundred mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and great farms and in the south by primeval forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley. The lush Lake District to the south, however, is the homeland of Chile's indigenous peoples, the Araucanians.

You can understand where they got this notion from when you consider that the country stretches to the southernmost point of any land mass in the world apart from Antarctica, to a latitude of 56 degrees south. To give you an idea of how far south this is, consider that South Africa is located at about 35 degrees south and mainland Australia is around 39 degrees south! However, the string bean geography of Chile also stretches far northward. The distance between Arica, the northernmost city, and Puerto Williams, the southernmost town in the country and the world, is about 4,000 kilometers. This distance is equal to the span between Madrid and Moscow, or San Francisco and New York. On its western border, the Pacific Ocean washes up against Chile's long and rambling coastline, providing for a rich diversity of marine life. The cool Humboldt current that brings water from Antarctica is felt along the entire coast, with the water temperature decreasing significantly as one moves south. At certain points along the coast, the ocean is more than 8,000 meters deep. The Andes mountain range is the backbone of the country as well as the continent of South America. The soaring peaks catch the moisture laden clouds that blow across from the Pacific, causing the precipitation that feeds the rivers cascading down from its snow-capped heights. These rivers not only irrigate the land on their way back to the ocean, but also provide Chile with its main source of electricity. In the north, the rugged peaks reach altitudes well over 6,000 meters, including the famous Ojos Del Salado, the highest volcano in the world at 6908 meters. The Andes diminish in size as one heads south, becoming a string of snow-capped volcanoes and rugged faces reaching skyward from plush temperate rainforests. The range then disappears in the deep south and runs along the ocean floor before reemerging in Antarctica.
