Some of us have children of our own. But this does not mean that we perfectly understand childrens culture, or that we have nothing more to learn from childish things. English 428 (Childrens Literature) assumes that children and their books deserve, and reward, the most careful study. This course values childrens texts as highly it does classic literature, and demands the same sort of discipline as any other Literature course. We are going to try to reenter childhood with a critical eye, and will be working very hard to understand what many people simply take for granted. In fact childhood is no easy thing. Children live complex lives, and participate in a complex culture that is at once oral, literate, and influenced by various competing media. The ways in which children relate to literatureand the ways literature appeals to children, parents and teachersare complicated, and demand our best attention as scholars. Because most of us have learned to read and write via childrens literature, and because childrens texts raise tough questions about form, audience, and ideology, this course is integral to the mission of English Studies and can play a vital part in your training as readers, writers, and thinkers (and in some cases teachers and literary critics).
