Extractions: The importance of children's books in the reading development of a child is undisputed. And since the only way most children can learn to be good readers is to read regularly, it is important to encourage children to read from the beginning. The importance of reading aloud children's books cannot be overemphasized. By reading aloud to your children, you are emphasizing the joy of reading, introducing them to new vocabulary words and ideas, expanding their knowledge, and learning more about their interests. Often, hearing a story from children's books can foster a child's interest in learning more by reading independently. At some point, you might pick children's books at, not above, your child's reading level, and take turns reading portions aloud to one another. One of the most important roles a parent or other caring adult can play is as a good role mode in encouraging the reading of children's books. It's difficult for children to believe in the importance of reading if there are few books in the home or they never see their parents reading, and they never go to the library. Reading for enjoyment is not enjoyable for children if they are forced to read. It's important to help your children find children's books at the right reading level on subjects that they like. Once you find children's books, you can encourage your children's interest by reading some of the book to them. Taking turns reading in reading children's book always works. If the children's book is sufficiently interesting, you may find a child reading ahead by themselves.

Extractions: I just got finished using this book for a course in Childrens Literature, and it was extremely informative. Since I am interested in childrens literature (to read, and possibly to write), it was great to find out about all the different facets of literature for children, from historical childrens lit, to multicultural lit, to award-winning literature. Great resource for childrens literature This book covers a wide range of genres of childrens literature. It is written in an easy to read style, and covers everything a teacher or media specialist would need to begin working with childrens literature. It was outstanding! The addition of the CD-ROM gives even more resources. I think it is a wonderful book. The very best teachers reference for childrens literature.

The Right Childrens Books: Kid-Lit.Com - How To Start Were they nonfiction? Were they about everyday life? This will help youdetermine a genre that your child enjoys. The main Kid-lit genres are http://www.kid-lit.com/find-start.htm
Extractions: Home About Kid-Lit The Right Books Your Comments ... Quick Lists Where Do I Start? Kid-Lits goal is to suggest books that I think your child will enjoy reading. These suggestions are based on your childs gender, age, and reading level So, the first place to start is with your child. You already know his or her age and gender but what about his reading level? This usually matches the grade your child is in, but not always. Some children are very early readers and will be reading at, for example, a 4 th grade level in 2 nd grade; other children are later readers and may be reading at, for example, a 3 rd grade level in 4 th grade. If you have no idea of what your childs reading level is, check with his teacher . Or, if you know of a book which your child has recently read with ease you can check to see if it is in the Kid-Lit database. If we list the book, we will tell you that books reading level. Gender, age and reading level are all you need to know to do a basic search in Kid-Lit. Once you submit this data, you will be shown a list of books. Each book will be rated with Kid-Lit stars.
