Extractions: This study represents the fourth discipline-specific journal cost study undertaken by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. Data for physics, economics and neuroscienceas well as more specific information about methodologymay be found at the following URL: http://www.library.wisc.edu/projects/glsdo/cost.html . These studies have proven to be very useful to librarians on this campus as they make the nearly annual decisions about which journals to retain. We also hope that scientists, who are becoming increasingly sensitized to journal cost issues, will use this data to make informed decisions about which journals to support with their contributions, editing and reviewing. A more detailed discussion of the broader context for these studies can be found at the following Association of Research Libraries site: http://www.arl.org/newsltr/205/wisconsin.html Although conducted independently by Chemistry Library staff, the chemistry journal study followed essentially the same methodology employed by the earlier studies: cost per thousand characters of journal content was calculated for each title and then divided by the journal's ISI Impact Factor. The resulting number provides, we believe, a reasonable indicatorif not a precise measureof the cost effectiveness of each title. In our study we also introduced another measure of cost effectiveness made possible by cost per use data that has been generated by the Wendt Engineering Library for campus serials (see
