Database of chemical scientists About FECS The Federation of European Chemical Societies and Professional Institutions (FECS) is a voluntary organisation. Its object is to promote co-operation in Europe between those non-profit-making scientific and technical societies in the field of chemistry whose membership consists largely of individual qualified chemists and whose interests include the science and/or practice of chemistry. It was founded in 1970. FECS is a partner in AllChemE (Alliance for Chemical Sciences and Technologies in Europe) and is an Associated Organisation of IUPAC FECS provides a powerful single voice for chemists and the chemical sciences in Europe through its activities and development of policy. The organisation can draw upon significant resources, having over 40 member societies which in total represent some 200,000 individual chemists in academia, industry and government in over 30 countries across Europe.

Extractions: Announcement : July 2005 Introduction Eligibility Criteria Budget Selection Criteria Application Procedure ... Award Recipients: Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to further the development of scientific leadership in the field of environmental chemistry with a postdoctoral fellowship program. The award of $120,000 over two years is given to a faculty member who submits a proposal judged to be exceptional, both in its potential for leading edge contributions to environmental science, and in the arrangements for the education of the Fellow. The spirit of this program is for research leaders in environmental chemistry, after notification of the award, to recruit excellent young Ph.D. graduates from the fields of physical, organic, inorganic, biological chemistry or associated fields in chemical engineering, and provide them with the highest caliber of research experience and education in environmental science. Whereas the postdoctoral Fellow may not initially be experienced in environmental science, the Foundation trusts that the Fellow will have demonstrated the highest caliber of capabilities and research accomplishments in basic chemistry or chemical engineering as a graduate student. The expectation is that the postdoctoral research accomplishments and educational broadening under this program should allow the Fellow to achieve a position where high quality research related to the environment will continue.

Extractions: Announcement : July 2005 Introduction Eligibility criteria Selection criteria Budget Nomination procedure ... Award Recipients: Start-up Award Program The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to support the scholarly activity of new faculty at primarily undergraduate institutions with a Start-up Award designed to help initiate their research programs. The award provides an unrestricted research grant of $20,000 that is generally made before the new faculty members formally begin their first tenure-track appointments. The Start-up Award Program is open to all academic institutions in the States, Districts, and Territories of the United States of America that do not grant a doctoral degree in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering. Faculty members who start their first tenure-track appointment in one of these departments in 2005 are eligible for nomination in 2005. Recommendations for awards are based on evidence that the nominee has the potential to produce an independent body of scholarship of outstanding quality in an undergraduate environment. Such scholarship should include both research in and a dedication to overall education in the chemical sciences. Nominations are reviewed by distinguished faculty in the field of chemistry.

Access to institutions of higher education is very competitive, with only 30 percent of all students undertaking the rigorous Gymnasium program. Higher education is financed by the government. Universities are divided into faculties, which are made up of various departments. The length of a degree program depends on the field of study, but most institutions have begun to limit the number of semesters a student can extend studies. At the end of a degree program, a student must pass the Staatsexamen (state exam) to receive the Diplom , representing at least four years of university studies. The doctorate is awarded after an additional two- to four-year program of research and a thesis. The academic year runs from October to July and is on the semester system. The German curriculum emphasizes independent study. Students are expected to do independent reading, prepare oral reports and papers and attend lectures and small group discussions. Student must complete a certain amount of coursework to sit for the interim exams. German institutions grade on a scale of 1-5; 1 is the highest while 5 is failing. The academic record consists of the student's collection of

A student then continues in either an escuela normal for teacher-training; a preparatoria universitaria for the bachillerato , which permits admission to all university faculties; or in a for technical training, with further study at a technological institution. After three to five years of higher education, a professional title in engineering, architecture, etc., is given. Similarly, the licenciatura degree is achieved for studies in humanities, social sciences or law. One or two years more are required for the maestria , and two or three more for the doctorado. For the latter, oral examinations and a thesis are required. Papers may be assigned during the semester, but term projects and final exams carry the most weight in assigning grades. Professors are accessible to students and class participation is expected. The universities work on a semester basis, and the grading system is from 1 to 10, with 6 as the passing grade.
