Graduates with chemistry education degrees have no difficulty finding employment. In part this is due to a national teacher shortage, especially in the sciences. But an Asbury College degree gives an extra edge to those wanting to teach, providing excellent preparation and carrying a solid reputation around the country. In fact, nearly 100 percent of education majors from the College who seek employment in education find jobs after graduation. Physical science majors participate in a joint program with the University of Kentucky, earning an additional bachelor's degree in an engineering field. Most graduates from this program enter directly into the workforce as engineers in a variety of areas. Chemistry majors often go on to graduate school or professional school in one of the health professions. Many, however, find careers immediately after graduation as research technicians in laboratories around the nation or analytical chemists for major corporations or environmental agencies. Asburians' experience with a broad range of equipment in their lab courses enables them to make a smooth transition into using that equipment in their jobs. Biochemistry graduates are especially well prepared to enter medical school due to the broad and in-depth exposure to the sciences they receive. Others choose to enter a biochemical field, working in drug development for major pharmaceutical companies, disease study with organizations like the Center for Disease Control or in other health-related areas, such as pharmacy. Study of the biochemistry of the human body is a rapidly growing field, with many opportunities for finding a significant vocation.

Members of the department teach a wide variety of introductory and advanced courses. The department offers both a major and a minor in chemistry; majors may choose their curriculum to receive ACS certification. In addition there are numerous opportunities for students to work with faculty on independent research projects. Faculty research interests cover several areas of chemistry, including inorganic, physical, organic, biochemistry, and computational chemistry. Extractions: Research activities in Medicinal Chemistry are focused on studying the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Theses programs include: (a) understanding the bioactivation and detoxification of procarcinogens; and (b) understanding the molecular and structural basis of how carcinogen-DNA adducts induce mutation and affect DNA replication, ultimately leading to cancer. Extractions: The Department of Chemistry Students who choose to major or minor in chemistry at Cumberland College will benefit from close working relationships with a highly trained faculty that prioritizes student research opportunities and practical experience. Course work prepares students to move directly into careers in such areas as secondary education, industrial chemistry, and environmental science, or to further their education with graduate studies in chemistry, medicine, dentistry, optometry, or pharmacy. All chemistry majors complete a research project in an area of special interest during their senior year. In recent years, many of these student projects have been selected for summer programs at research institutions including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Clemson University, Notre Dame, Brown University, and the Natural History Museum in London, England. Small classes ensure students will have the best possible access to superior equipment in classrooms and laboratories. The Alchemist Club, an affiliate of the American Chemical Society, sponsors field trips, special events, and guest speakers, offering students broad exposure to activities and developments in the field. Each year, the Alchemist Club sponsors the Cumberland College Chemistry Symposium , a day of competitive events for high school students designed to excite young people about the possibilities of careers in science.

Extractions: Additional Information/Applications Since the founding of Bryn Mawr in 1885, the Department of Chemistry has offered programs leading to either the M.A. or Ph.D. degrees. The graduate program in chemistry is designed to prepare men and women for professional careers in research and teaching by providing them with a sound background in modern chemistry. The fields of specialization represented in the department include organic chemistry (Professor Frank Mallory , Professor Bill Malachowski ), physical chemistry (Professor Michelle Francl , Professor Edward Wovchko ), inorganic chemistry (Professor Sharon Burgmayer ), and biological chemistry (Professor Susan White Students are expected to develop a command of one of these fields through a program of advanced courses and through the experience of carrying out research under the supervision of a member of the faculty. Currently, we have active research programs in the following areas: organic synthesis and methodology development; enzyme inhibitor design and development; organic photochemistry; synthesis and investigation of solubilized "graphite ribbons"; NMR studies of intramolecular interactions in organic molecules; solid state studies of intramolecular rotation of alkyl groups attached to aromatic rings; ab initio molecular orbital calculations applied to reaction mechanisms; computational chemistry; surface chemistry of high area materials; heterogeneous catalysis; surface photochemistry; transition metal complexes involving heterocyclic ligands; bioinorganic chemistry; and biochemical and biophysical studies of the structure, stability, and protein binding of RNA molecules.

Extractions: select an image to enlarge The Department is housed in the newly built School of Pharmacy and the teaching and research facilities are centered on the second floor of the Panoz Institute of the East End of the college campus. The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry as one of the four academic departments in the School of Pharmacy is responsible for the teaching of the basic and applied pharmaceutical chemistry components of the B.Sc. (Pharm.) degree course taught to undergraduate students of Pharmacy. The Department teaches over the four years of the course. The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry has recently developed a taught M.Sc. degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis The Department is also involved in the teaching of Pharmaceutical Chemistry to the undergraduate Diploma for Pharmaceutical Technicians , the postgraduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology and the M.Sc. in Hospital Pharmacy and contributes to the recently introduced B.A. (Mod.) degree in Medicinal Chemistry.

The goal of this program is to arouse interest in science in young people by presenting demonstrations which illustrate basic chemical principles. The Chemistry Department also enlists chemistry students, including undergraduates, to travel throughout Tucson's public schools to give chemistry demonstrations to science classes. Alpha Chi Sigma, the chemistry fraternity, plays a key role in this volunteer effort. As many as 4,000 public school students are reached through this program.
