Ffrancon Williams Alumni Distinguished Service Representative publications Biographical sketch Our primary interest is in the structure and reactivity of free radicals and radical ions. These paramagnetic species are generated by solid state gamma-irradiation techniques and studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR hyperfine pattern of the signal carrier contains detailed information about the spin distribution and geometry that allows the complete molecular structure of the radical to be determined. The ESR technique is also used to follow the unimolecular and bimolecular reactions of these species. Current work is centered on the important role of vibronic coupling that, in the case of low-lying excited states, brings about an admixture of excited-state character into the wavefunction of the open-shell molecule. This pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect can induce structural distortions resulting, for example, in the twisting of the bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-2-ene radical cation about the olefin bond [Chem. Eur. J.

Extractions: john.zhang@chemistry.gatech.edu Biography Professor Zhang received his B.S. from Fudan University in 1984. He went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989. Under the direction of Professor Arthur B. Ellis , he worked on chemically controlling semiconductor photoluminescence properties with molecular adsorbates. After obtained his Ph.D. in 1993, he worked with Professor Charles M. Lieber as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. His research was focused on the synthesis and physical properties of a new class of material - carbon nitride solids. He joined the faculty of Georgia Tech in 1996. Research Interest The research interests of Dr. Zhang and his group are the synthesis and characterization of new solid-state inorganic materials that possess novel physical properties and have the potential for the applications in advanced technologies. The underlying emphasis of the research is to search for the relationships of the chemical composition and crystal structure with the materials properties. Such studies will facilitate the realization of the grand goal in materials research - designing and rationally synthesizing materials with desired physical properties. The current research focus of Zhang's group is on the synthesis and characterization of magnetic metal oxides with an emphasis on chemically controlling magnetic properties. The specific goal is to understand, at the molecular level, the physical properties of magnetic solids through the systematic studies of chemical composition, structure and coordination chemistry. The fundamental issue in magnetic materials studies is the effect of magnetic couplings that include the electron spin-spin, electron spin-orbital, and interparticle magnetic moment couplings. The relationships between the macroscopic magnetic properties and the microscopic magnetic couplings are not yet well understood. Zhang's group is examining the contribution of various magnetic couplings to macroscopic magnetic properties by utilizing crystal chemistry to rationally control the magnitude of coupling components and the geometric length scales of the couplings.
