Extractions: Index Biography Our web site, "Explorers of the Millennium," will provide students with a wealth of information about the most important explorers of the past thousand years in a simple, easy-to-use format. We included reports on nineteen explorers, chosen by members of our team. We organized the explorers on separate "Hall of Fame" and "Timeline" web pages, so that users can look for a particular explorer by name or by century. We have a links page to help students find other helpful Web sites that relate to the explorers selected. A quiz section gives visitors a chance to see what they know about some of our explorers. A feedback page invites visitors to submit their own nominations for our Explorers' Hall of Fame. We hope that a visit to "Explorers of the Millennium" will answer students' questions about explorers, lead them to new sources of information, and encourage them to think critically about which explorers were the "greatest" and why. Extractions: Major Explorers of New York State In 1493, Christopher Columbus returned to Spain from America with tales of his voyage to the islands he had discovered off the coast of what he thought was India. Soon other countries in Europe began sending ships to explore these new lands seeking the riches they might provide. One of their primary goals was also to try to find a quicker trade route to Asia, the land of silks and spices. This search for the Northwest Passage lead to many new discoveries and claims. By the early 16 th century (1500s) France, Italy, and England had begun their explorations. John Cabot John Cabot, like Columbus, believed that Asia could be reached by sailing westward. Cabot, an Italian ship captain, made two voyages to the new world. In 1497, he sailed for the King of England. He reached the northern coast of North America in what today is part of Canada. He sailed southward, exploring possibly as far as New York.

Extractions: by Théophile Hamel (1870) Samuel de Champlain (c. or ) was a French geographer draftsman explorer and founder of Quebec City Born in Brouage, France , much of Champlain's early life is unknown. His first trip to North America was on March 15th as part of a fur trading expedition. Although he had no official assignment on the voyage, he created a map of the St. Lawrence River and, on his return to France on September 20th , wrote an account of his travels called Des sauvages (The Savages). Instructed by Henry IV to make a report on his discoveries, Champlain joined another expedition to New France in the spring of led by Pierre Dugua Sieur de Monts . He helped found the Saint Croix Island settlement which was abandoned the following winter. Afterwards the expedition founded the settlement of Port Royal, Nova Scotia with Champlain's help. Champlain lived at Port Royal during the following years while exploring the Atlantic coast. He explored and mapped the entire atlantic coastline from Cape Breton to the south of Cap Blanc . In May of Port Royal was abandoned when de Monts's trading privileges were revoked and the expedition returned to France.

Extractions: "Samuel Champlain was born at Brouage, a small seaport town in the old province of Saintonge, southeast of Rochefort and opposite the island of Oléron, about the year 1567." Little is known of Champlain's family background; indeed, though he wrote much, little personal information of Champlain's life is known. It is known, however, that Champlain learned the ways of the sea from his uncle. Champlain's first substantial voyage, one to Spain, was with his uncle. This voyage led him to be on a chartered French vessel which went to the "West Indians and New Spain with the annual fleet." On his return to France two years later, the 32 year old Champlain was to link up with Francis Gravé, Sieur du Pont ( Pontgravé ), a merchant, fur trader, and a citizen of St. Malo. The two of them, Pontgravé and Champlain, in 1603, voyaged together up the "rivière de Canada." Champlain, it would appear had no official position in this trading voyage. Pontgravé's business was at the trading post which had been established at Tadoussac. Leaving Pontgravé to his business, Champlain explored. He went "12 leagues" up the Saguenay; and then further up the St. Lawrence as far as Hochelaga (Montreal) passing on his way a place which in time he was to spend most all of his life (Quebec). Before the summer was out, Champlain returned to Tadoussac and embarked with Pontgravé for the return trip to France. map Champlain came over with the de Monts expedition in 1605. A narrative of Champlain's adventures in Acadia is contained in my history of Acadia, in one of its very first chapters, "
