Extractions: Volume 14, Number 06 - November 8, 2002 Vacationing in Central America By Amy Fordyce If you would like to experience historic adventures, beautiful beaches and a warm inviting atmosphere then you should consider a trip to Central America. Central America, the bridge between North and South America is home to seven countries that when compared on a map are smaller then the state of California. The region is comprised of Belize and Guatemala, which border the southeastern side of Mexico. Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Though each of these countries is quite similar, they also have much diversity, to see one, is not to have seen them all. This article will focus on three of the seven. If you enjoy great water adventures, love participating in eco-tourism and want to see an untouched ecosystem of animals and wildlife without the language obstacle, you should go on a trip to Belize. Boasting the largest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere, Belize attracts many water enthusiasts. If you like snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or just being in amazement of natural wonder and extraordinary creatures the 185 miles of reef will certainly captivate you. The national language of Belize is English though you may hear Spanish, Caribbean, and native dialects as well. The country is still 66% forested and most of what you will find is inviting out door adventure discovering wildlife sanctuaries and national parks such as the Community Baboon Sanctuary home to the native howler monkey.

Extractions: Wedged into the northeastern corner of Central America, Belize offers some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery - both above and below water - in the Caribbean. Add to this magnificent inland landscapes, archeological ruins and wildlife to rival any destination in the region, and it's easy to see why the number of visitors to this tiny country increases every year. Despite its small size - roughly that of Wales or Massachusetts - Belize has the lowest population density in Central America, a fact that contributes to its easygoing, friendly and, with the exception of bustling Belize City, noticeably uncrowded character. In addition to these natural attractions, Belize boasts a wealth of archeological remains. Rising mysteriously out of the forests are the ruins of the ancient cities of the Maya, the civilization that dominated the area from around 2000 BC until the arrival of the Spanish. Traces of this astonishing culture have been found all over the country; Maya ceremonial artefacts have even been discovered deep in caves. And although only a few sites in Belize have been as extensively restored as the great Maya cities in Mexico's Yucatan pensinsula, many are at least as large and in their forest settings you'll see more wildlife and fewer tour buses.
