Extractions: by Steve Little The character of King Arthur is unique in literature. Most characters are known through their actions and words as described by the author of a story. Arthur, however, is a conglomerate of characters described by many different authors over a fifteen hundred year span. There is no single depiction of him, and one cannot trace his origin to a single author for the "definitive" description. As such, the character of Arthur is different depending on the era, culture, and the particular writer who is relating his version of the Arthurian legend. Three Kinds of Arthur There is much debate whether Arthur was an actual historical person. There is no absolute evidence, but it is possible that Arthur was a Briton or Romano-Briton king who led the Celts against the Anglo-Saxons in the early 8th century (Americana, Arthurian Romances , 1972). The kings of the medieval period were warlords that protected a particular area of land. They surrounded themselves with knights, or thanes, who swore allegiance in battle in exchange for gifts of gold, armor, and land. There are stories that depict Arthur in this role, similar to that of Beowulf and Hrothgar in the poem Beowulf . However, later stories show Arthur in a different light. There are three basic character descriptions of Arthur.

Extractions: Pyramids of Geezeh" by David Roberts Introduction: Grade Five and Six students from The International School of Amsterdam have worked on several investigative projects in 1996-97 and 1997-98. In Spring 1997 grade six students spent a month studying Ancient Egypt . They worked in pairs or in threes studying different aspects: the geography, the history, religion, the social structure and daily life and technology. Following the Egyptian project, students chose another civilization they wanted to learn more about. The choices included the Romans Greeks Celts Vikings ... Incas , Aztecs, Chinese , Etruscans, Maoris , and North American Indians. The groups then made a presentation to their classmates using multi-media authoring tools and in August 1997 a number of their projects were added to our Grade 6 Social Studies Web Site with links to other Internet resources and related school projects.

Search Archaeology Guide Rating and Review Ancient Ireland by Laurence Flanagan 1998. St. Martin's Press, New York. ISBN 0-312-21881-8 (hardback). 233 pages, plus 16 pages of a glossary and bibliographic sources, and an index. This lively survey of Irish archaeology contains a wealth of information concerning the prehistory of the green isle. Laurence Flanagan's book covers Ireland from the first human occupations, about 8000 years B.C., to the end of the Late Bronze Age, 700 BC; the Celts arrived in Ireland around 250 BC, and with them came historical records. Ancient Ireland concentrates on the pre-Celtic period, when what we know about the peoples and customs of the country come from archaeological evidence alone. The introduction of the book is a brief discussion of what constitutes archaeological evidence, a general discussion of the types of artifacts found, and a bit about chronological methods. The remainder of the book is divided into two parts; an introduction to the material cultures (artifacts, buildings, burials) of prehistoric Irish peoples, and an introduction to what we know about the social, environmental, and cultural aspects.
