Extractions: Located in the westernmost reaches of the Caribbean, Grand Cayman is about 180 miles west of Jamaica and 150 miles south of Cuba. It spans 76 square miles, approximately 22 miles long and eight miles at its widest point. The Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are 80 miles east-northeast of Grand Cayman and are separated from each other by seven miles of ocean. Cayman Brac covers about 14 square miles and Little Cayman, 10 square miles. The three islands are similar, but not identical, in their landforms. Grand Cayman is irregularly shaped and includes the North Sound, a shallow bay of about 35 square miles. The elevation is low (about 60 feet above sea level at its highest point). The Sister Islands are each amoeba-shaped and small. Cayman Brac, about 12 miles long and a little over a mile wide, rises highest. The Bluff, from which the island gets its name (Brac is Gaelic for bluff), soars to a nosebleed level - by Caymanian standards - of 140 feet above sea level. This cliff falls into the sea and is one of the most picturesque features of the islands. A few miles west, Little Cayman is the flattest of the three islands, reaching just 40 feet above sea level in the middle of the island.
Extractions: Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands - Geography The Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba, from which they are separated at the closest point by about 240 kilometers (see fig. 19). The three islands are an outcropping of the Cayman Ridge, a submarine mountain range that extends west from the Sierra Maestra mountain range in Cuba. Grand Cayman is the largest of the islands with a total area of 195 square kilometers. Cayman Brac, 142 kilometers northeast of Grand Cayman, is only 20 kilometers long by 2 kilometers wide. Little Cayman, eight kilometers west of Cayman Brac, is sixteen kilometers by two kilometers in size. The total land area of the three islands is 260 square kilometers, or approximately that of Austin, Texas. All three islands are low lying and are composed of limestone and consolidated coral. A seventeen-meter hill at the northwest tip of Grand Cayman is its highest point. The highest point on Little Cayman is only twelve meters in elevation. Cayman Brac is distinguished by a forty-three-meter limestone cliff that rises from the sea on its eastern tip. Vegetation is largely scrub with mangrove swamps covering about a third of all the islands' area. The climate is tropical, tempered by the northeasterly trade winds. Temperatures are fairly constant, ranging from summer maximums of 30°C to winter minimums of 20°C. The rainy season extends from mid-May through October; the remaining months are relatively dry. Hurricanes pose a threat from midsummer until November, although no hurricane has struck the islands directly since 1932.

Christopher Columbus sighted the uninhabited sister islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac in 1503 and noted the abundance of turtles in the surrounding waters, naming them Las Tortugas . That name eventually changed to Cayman , reflecting the presence of crocodiles in the 16th and 17th century. English settlers from Jamaica colonized the Cayman Islands after they were ceded by Spain to England in 1670 hence becoming a British Overseas Territory. The Cayman Islands have a long history of pirate and privateer activity. Bloody Bay Wall is supposed to have been so named after an ugly battle left the water blood red. Despite the lack of rivers, Little Cayman still hides a few fresh water points, still called Pirates Wells. E njoying a pleasant tropical climate, sandy beaches, and translucent waters, the Cayman Islands have become a prime tourist destination in the Caribbean. To this day, tourism and international banking form the backbone of the economy. The country includes three islands, the largest of which is Grand Cayman. The capital city of Georgetown, where much of the population lives, lies on the west coast of this island. The much smaller Little Cayman and Cayman Brac islands are situated 80 miles northeast of Grand Cayman.

Extractions: The Cayman Islands' physical isolation under early British colonial rule allowed the development of an indigenous set of administrative and legal traditions which were codified into a constitution in 1959. Although still a British Crown Colony, the islands toady are self-governed in nearly all respects. The constitution, or Cayman Islands Order, that now governs the islands came into effect in 1972 and was amended in 1984. The Cayman Islands' political system is very stable, bolstered by a tradition of restrained civil governance, sustained economic prosperity, and its relative isolation from foreign policy concerns by virtue of its colonial relationship with the United Kingdom. Public discussion revolves around public sector expenditure and social services, the pace of additional economic development, and the status of the large foreign national community on the islands.
