The bronze Manneken is thought to represent the 'irreverent spirit' of Brussels, but there are numerous tales about its beginnings. Started by Louis XV of France many years ago, it has been the custom of foreign countries, companies, visiting dignitaries or charities to donate an outfit to the Mannekis-Pis and the little boy is usually decked out in the latest costume; previous costumes are displayed in the City of Brussels Museum. Extractions: Cruise Diva Goes Ashore: Antwerp, Belgium Diamonds are indeed a girl's (and Antwerp's) best friend. It's here that 70% of the world's diamonds are sent to be cut, polished, and set. Splendid art nouveau and art deco architecture and charm belie the fact that Antwerp is one of Europe's leading port cities. As in the rest of Belgium, three languages are all "official" and, depending on where you are, you'll hear Flemish, French, or German. Diversions Taxis meet arriving cruise ships and Antwerp features a tourist-friendly network of trams. Plan a stroll through the narrow cobbled streets and broad squares of the old town, one of the cultural capitals of Europe. It's a short walk from the pier to the city center and the Grote Market or main square lined with cafes, shops, the Renaissance style Stadhuis (town hall), Brabo Fountain, and guild houses. Also close to the pier, the National Maritime Museum is housed in the Steen, a 12th-century medieval castle.

An American view by Melissa Rossi Slowly but surely, were uncovering the treasures of Europes hidden gem as well as figuring out exactly where Belgium is on the map. In fact, some of us have even deduced that it is the countrys geographical location situated between France, Germany and the Netherlands, all of which lassoed the land in the past that makes Belgium what it is: dripping with fabulous architecture, swimming in culture, brimming with fireside nooks for drinking and fine dining, and layered in international complexity. In short, were learning that Belgium is a Cinderella country emerging from the shadows of its stepsister-neighbours, and finally coming out for the ball!
Extractions: Title: Weinreb Architectural collection Dates: Abstract: Sketchbooks of drawings and plans, architectural drawings, lithographs and other reproductions of largely European architecture constitute the Weinreb Architectural collection, a group of materials that represents a small selection of the inventory of London antiquarian architectural bookseller Ben Weinreb (1912-1999). The sketchbooks especially document architects' visits to important examples of European architecture in the mid- to late-19th century to sketch and study their styles and forms. Other sketchbooks are of plans for residences, churches, and a hotel of the same period. The majority of the unbound original architectural drawings are presentation drawings of designs by Oliver Hill, RIBA, executed by J.D.M. Harvey. Reproductions in the collection consist mainly of late-19th century lithographic views of port cities in Sweden, Italy, and France. Extractions: www.castlesoftheworld.com Though the first mention of Bouillon is in a text dating from 988, there can be no doubt that it existed for centuries before then. Experts agree that the name goes back to the Gallo-Roman period. In the absence of conclusive documentation it is not possible to put forward any precise date for the foundation of the castle. Historically the castle commands the north-south passage between the Upper and Lower Lotharingia, those famous -avenues des Frangais,, (Avenues of the French), the natural route of all south-bound invasions until 1940. 1) The Dukes of the House of Ardenne (Godfrey was the fifth and last on the line) owned the castle until 1096, when Godfrey of Bouillon sold all of his Duchy to Otbert, prince-bishop of Liege (with the possibility of buying it back after three years). Otbert plundered the churches and monasteries of his own diocese to obtain the money to enable him to meet the outlay of the first crusade. The Duke conquered Jerusalem and died there in 1 1 00 with the title of "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre" after having refused to wear the gold crown of a king "where Jesus Christ had worn a crown of thorns".

Extractions: Scouting with Mirjam Evers: Belgium is a must. s somebody who has been all over the world, looking through a view finder, everything came into focus in Belgium my new favorite country in Europe! I just came back from scouting this superb multi-cultural country with Frederique Raeymaekers, Director of the Belgian Tourist Office, where I realized that it is true: Belgium is indeed the best kept secret in Europe! Because of Frederiques connections throughout the country, this workshop will open doors, nobody else will ever be able to open! We visited medieval cities, quaint towns, gothic cathedrals, historic buildings, town halls, all of which showing Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Nouveau examples of art and architecture. We visited the most impressive castles. The beauty of all that Belgium has to offer stunned me. Belgium consists of Flanders in the North, with its great art cities, Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent, where the majority of the people speak Dutch. Wallonia to the South, with the rolling hills of the Ardennes, various castles and the city Namur, known as the historic, strategic, fortified city on the Meuse River. The Walloons speak French. But not to worry, everybody in Belgium speaks English as well.
