Best-Of Photography Endless good beer, a rich history and scrumptuous waffles: these three images came to our minds before we stepped off the plane. Isn't it amazing how much product marketing, travel shows on OPB and ignorance can "define" a country in our minds? The good news is that Belgium did One of the fascinating aspects of historical architecture is how much attention to detail the craftspeople, architects and builders of the time paid to their craft. Walking around this Leuven City Hall, we were astonished by the ornamentation around every window, every nook, every spire. And this is just one of the many painstakingly crafted artifacts of the past that adorns this world. Why is it that today our civilization does not build such wonders? Is it a matter of style? Money? Lack of patience?

Extractions: Belgium Attraction : Castle Bouillion Back to Top According to the principal of millitary architecture, each succesive element of defense has to overlook the preceding one the Kmowledgeable visitor will realize immediately that the castle of Bouillion provides a fine example of that principle. The feudal castle is a group of works built in relation to each other defended individually but kept united by the idea of a comman defense. The most attractive is the great number of gun embransures and loop-holes. Don't miss the remarkable vestiges of the primitive defensive work of its sturcture. Its adoption of this new weapon, the various transformations made by Vauban, Louis XIV's millitary architect, and later by the Dutch contributed to its present appearance.

Renaissance Term generally used for periods that hark back to the culture of Classical antiquity. Though it has applications elsewhere, it is most often used to refer to that era in Europe, beginning approximately in the 14th century, in which a new style in painting, sculpture and architecture was forged in succession to that of Gothic and in which, in a broader cultural sense, the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern age was made. This period culminated in the High Renaissance, a brief phenomenon confined essentially to Italy in about the first two decades of the 16th century and supremely embodied in some of the work of that time by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Following this came that phase of the late Renaissance called MANNERISM. There are more than 45,000 articles in

Extractions: Photo : Ministry of the Brussels- Capital Region The forthcoming Heritage Days in the Brussels Capital Region will be held on 14 and 15 September 2002. The theme chosen by Willem Draps, Secretary of State, for this 14th Brussels edition is "Archaeology: from the Neolithic period to the Industrial Revolution". This theme, which has the scope to amaze, is intended to show people all the components of the regional archaeological heritage and to offer an archaeological approach to the heritage in general. The urban areas which we frequent on a daily basis have been shaped over the millennia by constant human activity. Although some people might not believe it, the concept of the archaeological heritage is not limited to the buried heritage. This heritage is also present above the ground, in the form of buildings from every era which reveal ancient focal points, in the changes that we can study that have been undergone by each landscape as time has gone by and in the traces of much more recent industrial activities which have already ceased. Furthermore, archaeological sites sometimes turn into veritable protected historic monuments, while certain outstanding structures are sometimes removed as being mere archaeological objects, according to Willem Draps. The two Heritage Days will therefore focus not only on archaeological sites, some of them currently under excavation, but also on built archaeology, landscape archaeology, industrial archaeology and archaeological collections, and on numerous disciplines associated with archaeology and relating to the earth, natural and historical sciences.

Himeji Castle Area Around Himeji City Himeji Castle Area [Himeji Castle] Himeji Castle, built in the early 17th century, represents the highest achievement in Japanese castle architecture. Designated as a national treasure in 1931, the castle was registered on the World Heritage list in 1933 as the first cultural site in Japan. The registration occurred because the castle has kept its original design at the time of construction, such as turrets, stone walls, gates, and moats, which still survive today. The main castle keep (Dai-tenshu) connected with three small keeps (Ko-tenshu) linked by passage turrets (Watari yagura) remains perfectly in their original forms. Because of its elegant appearance totally covered with white plaster includes castle keeps and turrets, the castle has been compared to a white bird flying off to the sky. Its famous nickname is Shirasagi-jo or White Heron Castle.
