Extractions: Austria The Republic of Austria, is located in central Europe, and is bounded by Slovenia and Italy in the south, Switzerland and Liechtenstein in the west, Germany and the Czech Republic in the north, and Slovakia and Hungary in the east. Famous for it's snow capped mountains, fine wines, Baroque architecture and above all it's music, Austria oozes class, quality and sophistication. The Austrian landscape points to a rich natural composition: high and central mountain regions, hill country and plains. The Alpine region stretches from the West to the South to the Vienna Basin, and takes up approximately two thirds of the nation's surface area. The western part of the country is mountainous while the east is hill country and flatlands, which stretch to the Pannonian Plain in northern Burgenland. Located on a plain bordered by the Wienerwald and the Carpathian foothills, the capital, Vienna, is a cultural, industrial, commercial, and transportation centre. Vienna owes its spectacular architectural heritage to the Habsburg dynasty that controlled much of Europe for 600 years. Of special interest are the Hofburg, or Imperial Palace, with it's 14th century Augustinian church, Imperial Apartments and Royal Chapel where the Vienna Boy's Choir sing. Many of the world's most important composers including Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Strauss and Mahler have lived and performed behind Vienna's Baroque facades.

Here, a view of NeuerPlatz, dominated by the massive Dragon Fountain, the emblem of the city. It was sculpted in the 16th century and inspired by the legend of a lindwurm (dragon), which was fueled by the discovery of a giant skull in a local swamp. Modern science has since identified it as the remains of a wooly rhinoceros. (SHNS photo courtesy Klagenfurt Tourism)

Extractions: 26 December 2004 to 17 January 2005 The great cities of the Hapsburgs were the golden trio of Vienna, Prague and Budapest, which witnessed the creativity of composers such as Mozart, Hayden, Liszt, Dvorak, Smetena, Bartok, Janacek and Strauss. We will view the great artworks held in the galleries of these cities with paintings by Da Vinci, Breugel, the Expressionists and Klimt. The Hapsburgs encouraged the development of the architectural grandeur of these cities. Winter is a time when the cultural life of these great cities comes to the fore. It is also the time when many Europeans escape to the snow covered mountains to enjoy traditional winter pursuits. Our Winter Odyssey explores the cities of Prague, Vienna and Budapest but also enjoys some of the architectural gems of Southern Bohemia where we stay in a genuine countryside castle and the Winter Wonderland scenery of the Austrian Salzkammergut. A learning experience in each city is enhanced as we are enlightened by leading lecturers from local universities. During the program we will attend musical performances in each city and inspect significant art collections. We also learn to cross country ski!

Yes, you give elaboration. Yes, you answer the prompt. Even so, I do have a few concerns: 1. The tone of this essay is very light and airy. Chipper, almost. At times it seems almost flippant. I don't know if this is good or bad, honestly. It certainly would stand out from other application essays. On the other hand, I might lack a gravity or seriousness a college essay reader is looking for in a college applicant. You might talk to your English teacher about this. 2. You jump from present tense to past and back again. Personally, I liked the narrative ring to the past tense bit: "I stood in utter awe of the vision on the mountainside." You might consider structuring both body paragraphs in a narrative fashion (told in past tense). For example, instead of saying, "Nothing in my mind can compare to the St. Stephans Cathedral in Vienna, Austria," you could describe first seeing it on your trip. This would only take a few changes in your wording. After describing it, tell the impact it had on your mind at the time (as you did in your second body paragraph).
