Extractions: Cartier (Click on it to see more pictures) Born in the seaport of Saint-Malo in 1491 to Jamet Cartier and Geseline Jansart, Jacques Cartier was a French explorer and mariner. Leading the first European expedition up the St. Lawrence River, his explorations are the basis for France's claims to land in what is now Canada. At Dieppe, a French center for navigators, Cartier studied navigation, and he may also have sailed to Newfoundland with a fishing crew in the early 1500's. It was believed that he was with Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian navigator, on expeditions to the New World during the 1520's. When Cartier was growing up in France, during the early sixteenth century, Europeans thought that Asia could be reached by sailing across the Atlantic to the West. Columbus thought he had reached the East Indies when he found land in 1492, while John Cabot thought he had reached Asia when he touched the mainland of America in 1497. As other voyages were made westward and more and more fishermen went to the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, the Europeans started to believe that if the land mass was not Asia, a route might be found through it that would lead to the riches of the East. The Spanish sailors and Portuguese mariners were discovering and conquering the islands of the Caribbean and the lands of Central and South America, and England was sending out searchers for the Northwest Passage. Although they would eventually claim most of North America, the French were the last major seafaring power of Europe to take a significant interest in the New World. It all began to change in 1524, when King Francis I of France sent Giovanni da Verrazano in search of a Northwest passage to Asia. Verrazano was a Tuscan noble by birth and, in the words of historian Lawrence Wroth, "a well educated, imaginative, and aggressive seaman". Although he failed to find a northwest passage, because no such passage exists at the latitudes where he was looking, Verrazano did explore the North American coastline from Nova Scotia to the Carolinas.

He sailed northwards along the coast but failed to find the passage to China. Ten years later, in 1534, France sent Jacques Cartier to explore America. His mission had three purposes: The Three Voyages of Jacques Cartier and their Results In , Cartier explored and mapped the Gulf of St. Lawrence. On the banks of the peninsula he erected a cross and claimed the land in the name of the king of France. He met friendly Natives willing to trade furs for trinkets. Although gold was not found, he reported the abundance of fish, timber and furs. He also felt that a wide river flowing from the west could be a promising route to China. He also got killed and eaten by the native of Americans. The Narrow Verrazano Bridge is named after him. He seems to have landed on the coast of present day North Carolina. John Cabot by Chris I am writing about an Italian explorer named John Cabot. John was born in 1450 in Genoa, Italy. Little is known about him as a boy. We do know he wanted to be a sailor when he was young. In 1497, he sailed for the first time for the king of England. He sailed to North America and landed in Cape Brenton. He also sailed the second time to the New Foundland. We should remember him because he discovered New Foundland. Also he sailed for England to North America. Giovanni Da Verrazano

Extractions: Major Explorers of New York State In 1493, Christopher Columbus returned to Spain from America with tales of his voyage to the islands he had discovered off the coast of what he thought was India. Soon other countries in Europe began sending ships to explore these new lands seeking the riches they might provide. One of their primary goals was also to try to find a quicker trade route to Asia, the land of silks and spices. This search for the Northwest Passage lead to many new discoveries and claims. By the early 16 th century (1500s) France, Italy, and England had begun their explorations. John Cabot John Cabot, like Columbus, believed that Asia could be reached by sailing westward. Cabot, an Italian ship captain, made two voyages to the new world. In 1497, he sailed for the King of England. He reached the northern coast of North America in what today is part of Canada. He sailed southward, exploring possibly as far as New York.

The King of Spain welcomes three of the survivors: Del Cano (second in command), Antonio Pigafetta (a writer who went along to record the journey), and one of Magellan's sailors. As they talk, the dramatic details of an ill-fated journey become clear. A fleet of five ships and over 250 men has dwindled to one ship and 18 men! Lack of wind, ice, starvation, native attacks, murder, and mutiny colour the tale. Magellan has not survived the journey, but has named the Pacific ocean and his fleet has circumnavigated the world! LEWIS AND CLARK (1774-1809; 1770-1838) Inspired by Voyages from Montreal by Canadian Alexander Mackenzie, Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States, sends a team of explorers into America's wild west. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark have returned to Washington with their guest, Chief Big White of the Mandans. All meet at the White House as the president requests a brief summary of the trip. He quickly learns of the careful studies and preparations needed to prepare for the trip, of 180 new types of plants identified in the field, of animals like coyote, and of jackrabbits seen for the first time by eastern explorers. He hears the story of Sacagawea and her role in helping the explorers survive! Lewis and Clark are rewarded, and this voyage ends happily. (4 Readers)

Some examples are a magnifying lens, compass, hat, map, journal, etc. Have students guess what is in the box before opening it. Then take out one item at a time and generate guesses about why the item is in the box. Also discuss what each item is used for. List ideas on the board or on chart paper. After the students have talked about all the items in the box, explain to the class that you are beginning a unit on explorers. Begin a KWL chart either on an enlarged ship model with K, W, and L on each sail or on just a chart. Elicit responses from students about what they already know about explorers and write them on the K part of the ship or chart. Then have them give responses about what they would like to learn on the W part of the ship or chart. Post this chart or ship up for the entire unit.

Editor's note: For additional "explorer" resources, be sure to check out this week's CURRICULUM story, Across the Sea: Europeans Explore the New World Students, perhaps distracted by the October 12 school holiday, often forget that Christopher Columbus wasn't the only explorer who sailed into uncharted seas to find an unknown land. They may not even realize that he wasn't even the first of those adventurers to set foot in the New World. Historians believe Leif Erikson, an Icelander, was the first European to arrive in North America, landing in what is now Canada in 1001. Then why is Columbus so widely-known and celebrated and Erikson so often ignored or forgotten? Pose the question before you begin exploring "Explorer" Web sites. Students should be able to answer that question and many more at the end of their online voyages.

Like most European explorers seeking a passage to China, Jacques Cartier hit an obstacle: North America. The territory on which he lands is peopled by Natives who call this land Canada . This word, he learns, means "encampment" or "collection of huts." Cartier plants a cross in Gaspesia and takes possession of Canada in the name of the king of France. Seaport of Dieppe At the beginning of the next century, New France begins to take shape when colonists recruited in France settle in the Saint Lawrence valley and Acadia Amongst other factors, success depends on the contribution of the first occupants, who introduced the French to the land, the climate and the Amerindians nations who peopled North America.
