Extractions: Jacques Cartier Jacques Cartier was born in 1491 in St. Malo France. No one knows too much about his life before his first sea voyage. The King of France, Francois I, sent him to look for a passage through or around North America to East Asia. Cartier set sail with two ships and landed on an island near the coast of Newfoundland twenty days later. He sailed around the Bay of St. Lawrence, visiting islands. They were so large, he thought they were part of the mainland. He met up with 50 canoes filled with Micmac Indians who greeted him. There was a large celebration and trading between the French and Micmac. Cartier was disappointed that the bay was not the route to China. He met a fishing party of 200 Hurons (indians) led by their chief, Donnacona. His sons, Domagaia and Taignagny, sailed with Cartier to act as interpreters and accompanied Cartier back to France. The indians told Cartier stories of a land in the north called Saguenay, full of gold and other riches. The indians were great storytellers and even though they knew it was not true, when the French became so excited about the riches, they told them more stories. After returning to France, Cartier wanted to make another voyage to find the treasured land. However, France was at war with Spain. There was little money for exploring. Finally in 1541, Cartier set sail for the New World again but this time under the leadership of Jean-Francois de la Rocque. The men built a fort near Saquenay and they collected what they thought were diamonds and gold. They turned out to be quartz and iron pyrite (fool's gold). After a cold winter, Cartier returned to France.

Extractions: Chapter 3 - "Early European Explorers" Norwegians though there be very little record of it visited the most northern parts of eastern North America over a thousand years ago. Indeed, maybe before the Norwegians, the Irish paid a visit; or maybe, in classic times, the Greeks. However, what we do know, pretty well for sure, is that the Norsemen first came to Iceland, then as the decades and centuries unfolded they traveled beyond Iceland, to Greenland; and, then again, beyond Greenland to the shores of Baffin Island and Labrador; and then, swinging south, in their frail vessels, down they came along the upper coast of eastern North America. Whatever motivated these northern Europeans to keep extending their northern voyages, and exactly when they might have made them, are further matters on which we are obliged to speculate. Was it for timber? Was it new lands for splintered clans? Whatever the extent of their explorations and the timing of them, it is believed that any settlements of the Norsemen were but of a temporary kind and that they made no great impact or contribution to the exploration of North America. Before we deal with such known explorers as Cabot and Cartier, we must acknowledge the thousands of seafaring men, who, in the process of making a living, came to the shores of America, especially those that are washed by the waters that flow over the great fishing banks of the northwestern Atlantic. Discovery, like everything else in life, is an evolutionary process and one voyage by one family was built upon the knowledge gained on a previous voyage of another family member; only slowly did the Europeans become aware of their courses and their objectives that lie to the east over the ocean.

Extractions: Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) was a French explorer who led three expeditions to Canada, in 1534, 1535, and 1541. He was looking for a route to the Pacific through North America (a Northwest Passage) but did not find one. Cartier paved the way for French exploration of North America. Cartier sailed inland, going 1,000 miles up the St. Lawrence River. He also tried to start a settlement in Quebec (in 1541), but it was abandoned after a terribly cold winter. Cartier named Canada ; "Kanata" means village or settlement in the Huron-Iroquois language. Cartier was given directions by Huron-Iroquois Indians for the route to "kanata," a village near what is now Quebec, but Cartier later named the entire region Canada. DE CHAMPLAIN, SAMUEL
