Extractions: Jacques Cartier Ryan D., Jeff S., Kevin Q., Doug K, Jason B. Ship by Johnny M., St. Lawrence River by Amanda J. Jacques Cartier was born on December 31, 1491 in St. Malo, France. He died on September 1, 1557 in St. Malo, France of old age. He had a gloomy and thoughtful personality. He was married to Maria Katherine des Granches in 1519. There is little known about Cartier's early life. He may have sailed in the early 1500s with a fishing fleet. He was an excellent fisherman. He studied navigation in Dieppe, a French navigation center. People believe he was with Giovanni Da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer. They went on a French voyage to the new world in the 1520s. In 1534, King Francis 1 sent Cartier to North America to search for gold. In 1535, he was sent on a second voyage to Canada. On all of Jacques Cartier's voyages, King Francis I supplied the ships, the men and everything else that Cartier needed. He expected to find a northwest route to China by water. He had two ships on his first voyage. On his second voyage, he had five ships and 500 men. Then, on his third and final voyage in 1541, he sailed to to St. Lawrence. His purpose on this third voyage was to establish a colony in Canada, but the mission was not successful. He settled in St. Malo and wrote an account of his expeditions that was published in 1545. Cartier left from St. Malo with two ships in April 1534. He started to sail northwest to China, but in 20 days, he saw Newfoundland. He sailed right between Newfoundland and the mainland, then he said southward through the Belle Isle Strait. Then, he went east of Newfoundland and entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence. On this voyage, he saw Prince Edward Island and the New Brunswick mainland, sailed to Chaluer Bay and he named it. He landed don the Gaspie Peninsula and crossed the Gaspie Peninsula. Much of French land in Canada was claimed by Cartier. He sailed again in 1535 under King Francis the first.

Extractions: Jacques Cartier was born in 1491 in the French seaport of St.Malo, and died in 1557.His childhood wasnt very eventful. Some people said that Jacques might have made a voyage by 1527, but his first voyage to the New World was in 1534. He explored during most of his adulthood. People started to hear and learn about him right before his first voyage when he became famous. Major Achievements Cartier's big highlights were in the St. Lawrence River area. He discovered the river and also went down it a few times. He explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence also. His main goal was to find a short route to Asia. He also went to Newfoundland and explored there a little bit. He was in many different areas of whats now Quebec and Canada. He also explored Anicosti Island. Country Jacques Cartier was picked for the journey because he had already been on a few expeditions, such as to Brazil and Newfoundland. His main missions were to find a quick route to Asia, riches, and later sailing routes. He was born in France sailed for France and lived in France for all of his life, except when he was on his expeditions. Cartier had a few expeditions, which was a little unlikely for most explorers back then. On his first voyage, France financed him two ships. Jacques Cartier was very fortunate with the natives living in the New World, compared to other explorers and countries. He had Indian friends to trade with and to count on instead of having to fight with. The tribe he was friends with was the Iriquois. These natives helped them survive scurvy, which is a disease caused by not enough vitamin C. The Indians helped him by teaching him how to make a tea with a lot of vitamin C.

Extractions: Throughout the winter of 1541-1542, the Iroquoians had kept the fort at Charlesbourg-Royal under seige. All attempts to assuage the native anger over the loss of their chief, Donnacona, failed and Cartier was unable to regain any of the previous relationships he had cultivated. In Spring of 1542, Cartier abandoned Charlesbourg-Royal and set out for France with a supply of what he believed was gold and diamonds gathered from the shores of the St. Lawrence River. In St. John's Harbour in Newfoundland, Cartier met up with de Robertval who had arrived in the New World with shiploads of supplies, colonists (mostly prisoners avoiding execution in France) and artillery. Cartier explained the previous winter's events and the Native hostilities, but de Robertval ordered Cartier to return to Charlesbourg-Royal and continue with the settlement. Charlesbourg-Royal must survive. Under cover of night, Cartier set sail for France, leaving de Robertval to do what he wished. Cartier knew the futility of the settlement and wanted nothing more to do with it, but also knew that he would probably be hanged for treason by disobeying his superior. (De Robertval continued to Charlesbourg-Royal without Cartier and renamed the settlement 'France Royal'. However, after losing 60 men to the winter cold and scurvy, de Robertval abandoned France Royal completely the next year.)

Extractions: Early Exploration Introduction In the beginning, North America and Canada did not exist... at least in the minds of Europeans. They knew of Cathay and of the rich trade possibilities there, but the ocean to the west was a barrier which seemed too vast to cross. When overland trade routes became blocked and the voyage around Africa was found to be long and dangerous, the European nations began to look westward for a shorter journey. Little did they know that they would discover a whole new world complete with its own unique peoples and riches. This section deals with the discovery and early explorations of Canada and the attempts by both the English and French to settle in and lay claim to the New World. It deals with the first encounters with the Native People and the fragile relationships which developed between the Natives and Europeans, and even among the Europeans themselves. It deals with the development of the fur trade which would effectively change Canada's history forever.
