Extractions: Testimonials from Recent Graduates: I wanted a college with a strong science department and competitive athletics. Millersville provided me with the best of both worlds the opportunity to make All-American in field hockey and graduate with Departmental Honors in Biology. The education I received enabled me to continue on and fulfill my dream I am now in my first year in medical school earning As and top in my class. One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Millersville was the research I did with Dr. Hepfer in yeast genetics. It provided a different approach to learning and gave me the opportunity to write a thesis and have my work published. Millersville is a great school with tons of opportunities, just waiting for you to take advantage of it.

Extractions: The theory of decision making is a fascinating study. How we make decisions is influenced by our personal philosophies, previous experiences and commitment to the result. Most of us have been trained in the classical theory of decision making, where it is important to gather information about all the possible alternate solutions to our problems. Based on good research data, the single best course of action will emerge. The AVA is undertaking a number of research projects to identify the needs of its members. These include: A survey on the readership of veterinary publications in Australia and the attitude of veterinarians towards the AVA and its services by Quadrant Research. In February, a four page questionnaire will be posted to 1000 veterinarians. If you receive a survey, please complete it so that the AVA can obtain as much information as possible. Indicators of a successful practice will be examined by John Collins and Robyn Whitely of the WC Company to determine the feasibility of the AVA introducing a distance education veterinary practice management program. Twenty practices throughout Australia will be interviewed and a further 200 will be mailed a questionnaire. Again, if you are included in the sample, your cooperation will ensure that the best decisions are made about future AVA activities.

Extractions: Dear Susanne I happen to have done my masters thesis on the behaviour of dogs in a pension with a group keeping system that had an unusually large, mixed-sexed group of appr. 100 dogs in the run. The dogs very well got along together; they even were fed in the group. Of course, it is absolutely necessary the dogs be supervised at any time in the run by an experienced person capable of controlling each groupmember. As dogs (particularly males) usually settle intraspecific aggressiv confrontations by ritualized behaviors, animals get scarcely wounded. Of crucial importance from the point of animal welfare aspects is the introduction of new charges into such a large group of residents. Besides coping with an unfamiliar environment and separation from its owner, the newcomer is confronted with immediate inspections by the dogs already in the run. Therefore, such introductions represent a situation of additional social stress. The amount of stess experienced by the animal depends on its sex, age, social self-confidence and sociability, and its shelter experience. Also, it is possible for the person introducing the dog, to ease the stressful situation during entry and to specifically influence the way the individual newcomer will integrate.

By Mary Welch OK, so I let him tell his story as he remembers it. This is how it went from our side of things... Like Bret said, "This one's going to hurt in the morning!" It depends on which morning he could have been talking about. For the first two days they kept him sedated. But I can say that I was not feeling too damn skippy in the morning either! Actually it was not until they had him stabilized at the third hospital that they allowed him to wake up. At hospital number two they sedated him with what they called "mother's milk". Apparently it was to keep him knocked out and to keep him from remembering what they were doing to him, as a nurse told me. But I will admit he was definitely not a happy camper when he did wake up. Oh wait! I was going to tell you about the merry-go-round we went on with the idiots at one of the hospitals. And the friends that pulled the strings that helped save his life.
