A major caution before we begin. Forensic scientists work in the justice system. If you have a criminal record, you have virtually no chance of getting a job as a forensic scientist. If you use drugs (and in Miami, even tobacco) you usually can forget it. Life ain't fair! There are lots of good jobs that overlook youthful indiscretions but the justice system does not. Extractions: Advice to Students and Parents From the Scientists of Mote Marine Laboratory Science is the systematic discovery of knowledge about the natural world, and marine science is the general term for research conducted in oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. Marine scientists work in a surprising variety of disciplines. Examples include planetology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, geology, physical oceanography, paleontology, and biology. Marine science also includes archaeology , anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Scientists in such disciplines may be highly specialized. Geologists, for example, may concentrate on coastal processes, dynamics of the continental shelf or slope, or structure of the ocean floor. Chemists may work entirely at the interface of the sea and atmosphere, in the zone affected by ocean waves, at the maximum depth of light penetration, or in the environments created by deep sea thermal vents. Biologists may work mostly in tropical waters or polar seas, on plants, invertebrates, or vertebrates. Many marine scientists have multiple specialties or work as part of multi disciplinary teams. Marine scientists are employed by universities and colleges, international organizations, federal and state agencies, private companies, nonprofit laboratories and local governments, or they may be self-employed . Marine scientists draw professional salaries and may be rewarded richly for their work in intangible ways, but they almost never become wealthy by American standards. Salaries depend on each person's education, experience, and specific discipline. Location, the present supply of scientists, and other factors also affect individual salaries. Examples of marine sciences that presently pay above-average salaries are physical oceanography, marine technology and engineering, and computer modeling.

The best advice to undergraduates at this stage seems to be, "Do what interests you and what you are good at." If you think you want to go on to Physics graduate school and ultimately be a professional physicist, you should ask yourself two questions: 1) Am I really, really excited by Physics, to the extent that I want to do it more than anything else? 2) Am I good at Physics? If your answers to both questions are positive, you should seriously consider majoring in Physics and then continuing on to graduate school. There will always be openings for good people. If you aren't sure about your answers, you should still consider majoring in Physics, but be thinking about other things to do after graduation.
