In this pamphlet we try to give you a flavor of some of the areas of mathematics in which there are many opportunities. At the end we provide a brief "road map" of mathematics. A bachelor's degree in mathematics will prepare you for fascinating jobs in statistics, actuarial sciences, mathematical modeling, and cryptography; for teaching; as well as for graduate school leading to a research career in mathematics or statistics. A strong background in mathematics is also necessary for research in many areas of computer science, social science, and engineering. As you read this pamphlet, look for several themes:

Opportunities In Economics Abound For African-American Students s world obtaining a doctorate in economics requires math that you have to be a math jock is challenging, leads to personally and financially rewarding careers. http://www.black-collegian.com/career/opportunity1001.shtml
Extractions: by William M. Rodgers III, Ph.D. Many of you probably think that in order to be an economist you must believe that markets rule, that the government and organized labor play little role in solving societal problems. They only disrupt the fluid operation of markets. For many of us, this view contradicts our personal experiences. Collective action and the public sector have and will continue to be a major part of the African-American experience. What does this have to do with studying economics? Everything, because when you enter your first economics course and see the instructor generate results that show organized labor and the public sectors ineffectiveness, you get turned off. A second turnoff for many of you is the poor treatment of race in economics curriculums. A third turnoff is the belief that to study economics, you must be a math jock. These pedagogy deficiencies and perceptions drive you away. Some of these are myths. Many economists demonstrate that institutions help to foster social justice. Departments have gotten better about their treatment of race. Yes, in todays world obtaining a doctorate in economics requires math proficiency, but the perception that you have to be a math jock is wrong.
Careers In Applied Mathematics And Computational Sciences and engineering disciplines, but also in economics, finance, management careers.htm or http//www.ams.org/careers/. math That Counts, SIAM News http//www.siam http://www.siam.org/careers/careers.htm
Extractions: Mathematics has burst the old boundaries that limited what an engineer could design, a scientist could know, or an executive could manage. Subtle interactions, masses of data, and complex systems are all within the scope of the tools and ideas of applied mathematics. In the past, engineers could only test changes by making them, an expensive cycle of build and bust. Now mathematical models are coupled with computation to simulate new designs before they are builtlike the Boeing 777 aircraft, the first "paperless airplane." Wind tunnels are old news in the airframe industry; the cutting edge is computational simulation. Genetic engineering, designer drugs, diesel engines, digital TV, financial markets, paper mills, electric power, insurance rates, inflation statistics, computer chips, compact disks, credit cards, car doors, circuit boards. mathematics is everywhere in modern business and industry. Applied mathematics tackles questions like these: A newspaper poll asks a thousand people if they approve or disapprove of casino gambling in their state. How will millions vote when the issue is on the ballot?

The Sociologist looks beyond individual psychology and unique events to the broad patterns of interaction that shape individual and social life. A degree in sociology is an excellent springboard for entering the world of business, organizations and social service. The sociological perspective is crucial for working in today's multi-ethnic and multinational business/government/ social service environment. An undergraduate sociology major provides valuable insights into social factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, education and social class that affect work and how organizations operate. Students will be given the opportunity to develop qualitative skills through the use of interviews, focus groups, and conflict, policy and social impact analysis. Additionally, students will be given the opportunity to develop quantitative skills including survey design, statistical analysis, and management of large-scale data. Upon graduation students can participate in strategic planning, trend analysis, market analysis, survey design and research, systems analysis, and interviewing projects.
