Extractions: Natural Resources Conservation The Natural Resources Conservation (NRC) associate of applied science (A.A.S.) program is the largest and oldest comprehensive environmental program offering the associate of applied science (A.A.S.) degree in New York State. The NRC curriculum provides a scientific and technical education for those who will seek employment in areas directly involved with the environment. Curriculum flexibility also provides for those interested in advanced degrees. Many graduates are transferring into a number of environmental studies programs at major universities throughout the United States or pursuing the Renewable Resources BT program offered in our Department. Natural Resources is a broad field, and the curriculum is designed to allow for some flexibility. This is accomplished by providing the following two areas of concentration: In addition, students may pursue either the Forest Technology (one-plus-one program with SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry) option or the Pre-environmental Science and Forestry option (available for students planning to transfer to one of several available programs at the State University College of Environmental Science and Forestry).

Extractions: Potential Careers ... Sources of Additional Information Forestry is the science, art, and practice of managing and using the natural resources on forestlands. The major combines social, physical, and biological sciences to ensure informed management of forests and associated resources. What the Major is Like Foresters are frequently involved in managing timber, water, recreation, forage, and wildlife habitat. They also play an important role in improving the environment. In addition to managing the forest's many resources, some forestry professionals are involved in wood science and technologythat is, they study the physical and chemical properties of wood as an industrial raw material. These specialists are concerned with all aspects of the manufacture and sale of wood products, such as oriented strand board and wafer board, and with new techniques for manufacturing other composite products. Their jobs may involve developing new wood products or monitoring the manufacture of existing products. Undergraduate programs begin with general course work in English, mathematics, chemistry, physics, speech, and statistics. Basic forestry is usually studied in the freshman year. Because forestry is a diversified field, students have to choose one of several specialized areas. Introductory forestry courses and field studies conducted by forestry faculty provide information about these options. Once students have acquired this background, they begin course work in their chosen area. The decision on the specialty may come as early as the freshman year or as late as the end of the sophomore year.

College Majors And Careers - Natural Resource Management Regardless of your career choices, increase your College, Research Assistant, fisheries Wildlife Development Committee, Extension forestry Specialist, North http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/Mnaturalresources.html
Extractions: Career Opportunities for Majors in Natural Resource Management Natural Resource Management, often categorized with the agricultural or environmental sciences, provides an understanding of how natural living systems function and how they can be managed to provide benefits to people. Students may pursue course work that prepares them for traditional careers in resource management, or they may take a broader array of courses that meets interests related to the conservation of natural resources and specific areas of concentration such as ecology, wildlife or fisheries. A broad background in natural resource management, however, is appropriate preparation for resource management professionals. Both practical (internship) experience and the development of basic computer application competency in the field are required. A bachelor's degree is sufficient for most advanced technician positions in a wide variety of organizations. As one progresses in the field an advanced degree might be required. While most natural resource management majors work in related occupations and eventually obtain advanced degrees, others choose different directions. Many careers do not require a specific major, but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability to employers through internships, responsible work experience, good grades, and involvement in college activities.
