LAAB is a member of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors. LAAB accredits 45 programs leading to baccalaureate degrees and 31 leading to masterâs degrees. Accreditation is a non-governmental, voluntary system of self-regulation. Its core is the concept of self-evaluation. ASLA accreditation evaluates each program on the basis of its stated objectives and compliance to externally mandated minimum standards. The program conducts a self-study to evaluate how well it is meeting its educational goals. LAAB then provides an independent assessment which determines if a program meets accreditation requirements. Programs leading to first-professional degrees at the bachelor's and master's level are eligible to seek LAAB accreditation. Others such as pre-professional and advanced professional landscape architecture programs are outside the scope of LAAB, as they have different educational objectives. The Board of Trustees of the American Society of Landscape Architects recognizes the quality of educational programs leading to first professional degrees in landscape architecture at the bachelorâs or masterâs level accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Accreditation Council. It regards the criteria for accreditation and many of the individual program guidelines to be comparable to those employed by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board of the ASLA. A list of CSLAAC accredited programs follows the LAAB list.

Landscape Construction and Management The sustainable development of our environment is the most important task in safeguarding the living conditions of later generations. The safeguarding and management of soil, water, air, animal and plant world are, therefore, the central areas of concern for the society in the coming decades. The management of the environment can not be carried out by landscape architects alone. They, however, make essential contributions in the spatial design and planning of particular projects. A course of study in landscape architecture aims at a balanced integration of specialized knowledge from the fields of ecology and natural sciences, the skills of creativity and design, and the engineering-related skills for the implementation of plans (technical, normative, economical). Studies in landscape architecture impart both specialist knowledge (e.g. soil science, vegetation science, plant utilization, landscaping, garden design/sculpture) and engineering-related skills necessary for the implementation of planning (e.g. electronic data processing applications, landscape engineering, handling construction work) as well as aspects of design and creativity (e.g. plan representation, design and graphic skills).

Other Majors Landscape Architecture is the design discipline concerned with the spaces between buildings, with human interaction with natural systems and nurturing sustainable life on this planet. Landscape architects work at a vast range of scales, from the processes encompassing whole states and nations, to urban planning and design, to site planning and detail design. Landscape architects find careers in a variety of places: in private landscape architectural consulting firms; with architects and engineers in inter-disciplinary consulting offices; in local, state and federal planning, transportation and parks departments, in development companies, real estate offices and construction companies. Landscape architects design and manage parks and open spaces, lay out neighborhoods and shopping centers, plan campuses, assist small communities in planning for sustained growth and the retention of their small town character. They design urban centers, as well as the fountains and plazas within them. As the environmentalists of the design profession, landscape architects devise water cleansing systems in wetlands, combat soil erosion in agricultural areas and restore mining operations sites.

Tourism Planner There are some wonderful jobs in landscape architecture - and some dull jobs. The disillusioned say Its hard to find work; if you do find it, you may not be paid; if you are paid, you'll be sued for negligence. Yet the prospects for the art of landscape design are utterly stupendous. The dust jacket of the Jellicoes Landscape of man rightly proclaims: The world is moving into a phase when landscape design may well be recognised as the most comprehensive of the arts. Man creates around him an environment that is a projection into nature of his abstract ideas. It is only in the present century that the collective landscape has emerged as a social necessity. We are promoting a landscape art on a scale never conceived of in history. So how can we move from the ridiculous to the sublime? I see two requirements: we should be clear in our minds about the nature of the art that we profess and we should open our minds to the many ways in which the art may be practised. In both cases, action must come from within. It is inaccurate and altogether fruitless to lay the blame for our predicament on unimaginative clients, an uncomprehending public or the rapacious practitioners of related professions.

Extractions: Friday, October 27, 2000 Printer friendly version Jan Schach, national president of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), met with students, faculty and other professional practitioners of landscape architecture on the UT Agricultural Campus last week to push for the development of a master's program in landscape architecture. According to those involved with past proposals, with the change in administration and budget constraints on existing programs throughout the university, the proposal for the master's program has been on the books for 50 years. There is a great demand for landscape architects because of the positive state of our economy. A landscape architect is the prime professional to deal with issues of urban sprawl and growth management, Schach said. I can't imagine that UT doesn't want to play a strong role in the growth management of this state. Schach's primary goal in visiting UT was to help administrators see the compelling need for the program and work through how to get it started.
