Lanier Canoe And Kayak Club, Gainesville, Georgia the honor, challenge and responsibility of the Lake Lanier Rowing Club and the Lanier canoe kayak Club to be the olympic legacy for these two sports on Lake http://www.lckc.org/venue-history.shtml
Extractions: Fax: 770.287.3444 The 1996 Olympic Canoe / Kayak and Rowing Venue Gainesville, Georgia In 1992, Gainesville Hall 96 Roundtable chaired by Jim Mathis was formed with other community leaders to seek Olympic opportunities. Jack Pyburn, a local rower, learned the rowing venue the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) had selected was in jeopardy. Jim and Jack worked to convince the International Rowing Federation to bring the venue to Lanier. ACOG was approached and lobbied by Jim and Steve Gilliam, Vice Chair of Gainesville Hall 96. They were successful. The full Gainesville Hall 96 Committee consisted of 35 dedicated community members who provided immeasurable support through providing a functioning office, merchandising, volunteers, Olympic housing, test event support, club support, fundraising, legal advice, and anything else that might arise! Executive Director, Mary Hart Wilheit, gracefully managed the office. Following the 1996 Olympic Games Gainesville Hall 96 became the Gainesville Hall 96 Foundation consisting of 12 members chaired by Jim Mathis. The boathouse, timing tower and racecourse remain as a permanent Olympic legacy - a gift to the local community. The Venue is co-owned by the City of Gainesville and Hall County, and is leased to the Gainesville Hall 96 Foundation. The construction of the facility was funded by ACOG. The land belongs to the Corp of Engineers. The Lake Lanier Rowing Club and the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club (LCKC) sublease the facilities. Gainesville Parks and Recreation and Hall County Parks and Leisure Departments assist with maintenance to the buildings and grounds and are the liaison with the city and county governments. No tax dollars are committed to the operation of the facility or programs. The clubs work in cooperation, but run separate programs.

Extractions: Seattle Times staff columnist Some really nasty stuff grows in Seattle's Green Lake. And some pretty amazing stuff grows out of it. Case in point: More than half of the U.S. canoe and kayak team paddling for medals in Australia. Flatwater kayaker Peter Newton spent time there. So did teammates John Mooney, Tamara Jenkins, Kathy Colin and Jordan Malloch. The lone abstention from the Green Lake club is likely whitewater kayaker Scott Shipley of Poulsbo, and he's probably at least been around the lake's jogging track a few times. Three of those six still call the Seattle area home: Jenkins, a Nathan Hale High School graduate who lives in Seattle; Malloch, who is from Seattle and attending the University of Washington; and Newton, who lives in Issaquah and works on the Eastside. They're all a paddling force expected to give the U.S. its best shot in many years at a place on the medals stand at the Penrith Lakes kayak venue near Sydney. The group, as usual, represents an odd coupling of rivals-turned-teammates. Like most other Olympic sports, kayaking takes competitors who wage fierce combat against one another for most of their careers and places them on a team. Unlike most sports, kayaking rivals wind up in the same boat, inches apart depending on their former foes to help them to a medal.

Extractions: Canoeing as a recreational sport was started in the 19th century by an English barrister, John MacGregor. MacGregor designed his own Eskimo-style kayak in 1845, and spent much of the next quarter-century taking the boat on extended trips across the rivers and lakes of Europe. During this time, he wrote a popular series of books and delivered lectures describing his canoeing experiences. MacGregor's adventures spawned many imitators, and in 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club to encourage further interest in the new sport. The club held its first regatta in 1867. By 1868 the RCC boasted 300 enthusiasts and had developed a fully realized set of rules to govern competitive canoe racing. The sport's popularity spread through Europe and North America, and the New York Canoe Club was founded in 1871.
