SchoolWorld Endangered Species Project: Mexican Gray Wolf Pennsylvania Rodale Press, 1994. Perry, Phyllis J. Crafty canines Coyotes, Foxes, and Wolves. Return to the SchoolWorld endangered Species index! http://www.schoolworld.asn.au/species/mxwolf.html
Extractions: Nickname: Lobo The Mexican Gray Wolf is a warm-blooded mammal. The Mexican Gray Wolf is a large dog-like carnivore. The coat on the wolf is a mixture of brown, rust, black, gray, and white. Mexican Gray Wolves have a distinct white lip line, chin and throat. Adult gray wolves are around three feet tall and almost 6 and 1/2 feet long. They weigh about 100 pounds. Females are about 6 feet long and weigh 50-75 pounds. They will eat a mouse or a moose and everything in-between. Their most common food though is deer, moose, elk, and occasionally rabbits, beavers, hares, and other small rodents. Wolves have a dominance order that they follow. Every member has a place and if they get out of line the alpha male or female growls at the subordinate, bares his or her fangs, and sometimes gives a harmless nip on the scruff of the neck. The ranking determines how the wolves are treated, who gets to eat first, and which pair mates. There are usually seven or eight wolves to a pack, but they can have more than 20 members. The leaders of the pack, or a wolf family, are called the alpha male and the alpha female. They tend to be the strongest and most experienced wolves in the pack. The leaders are not tyrants; they simply guide the family, determine when they should hunt, select the rendezvous site and home territory, lead the hunt, and charge to the front if they have to defend the young wolves against bears or other predators. The leaders are responsible and put themselves in the most danger.

Extractions: The Name "Chevrotain": "Chevrotain" is a French word "chevre," which means "goat," and it is then made diminutive to denote a "kid." It is not closely related to a goat. "Deer" comes from the German word "Tier," which simply means "animal." It is not closely related to a deer, either, and even less so to a mouse. Description: The brown coat is speckled with white markings. The body is stocky, with rounded hindquarters. The legs are slender and the feet are four-toed, but the outer toes are small. It has 34 teeth. The upper canines in the male are longer and more pointed than those of the female. This animal grows to about twenty inches long, thirteen inches at the shoulder, and they weigh about six pounds.
Weddell Seal Weddell seal LEPTONYCHOTES WEDDELLI. Possibly endangered. Class Animals March. The upper incisors and canines project forward. These http://www.americazoo.com/goto/index/mammals/334.htm
Extractions: Description: The fur is dark brown with numerous lighter markings on the back and head, but there is considerable color variation from individual to individual. Molting may occur any time during the summer months between December and March. The upper incisors and canines project forward. These seals grow to almost eleven feet long and weigh up to 775 pounds. The males are slightly smaller than the females. Behavior: Although this seal gathers in large groups during the pupping season, it tends to be solitary for the rest of the year. They protect their young vigorously. If a pup dies the mother will stay by the body for several days. They feed on fishes and squid. In winter these seals spend most of their lime in the water, breathing through holes in the ice made by their large canine teeth, which frequently break because of this activity.

Extractions: Endangered Species Thailand has some of the world's richest natural habitats and is home to some unique plant and animal treasures. The country encompasses diverse kinds of natural ecosystems, ranging from the hill evergreen and coniferous forest, on the higher altitudes in the north and the upper portion of the northeast, through to moist evergreen, dry evergreen, deciduous, dipterocarps, to the lowland rainforest and coastal mangroves plus an abundance of coral reefs around the islands to the south. Diversity From a total land area of 513,115 sq. km, Thailand possesses an amazing diversity of living organisms; 280 species of mammals; more than 950 species of birds; 300 species of reptiles; 107 species of amphibians; 1,900 species of fish; approximately 10,000 vascular plants and thousands of insects and invertebrate species. Much of Thailand's diverse wildlife can still be found in more than 180 protected areas, with some 14% of the total land area reserved. These reserved areas consist of 89 National Parks, 47 Wildlife Sanctuaries, and 53 designated non-hunting areas. Threats

I think endangered means some animals are almost extinct. Hunters try to kill some animals. Rhinos are endangered animals. Kohen asks: I am studying the sabre tooth tiger and I want to know, why were the tusks there? Sean Bell replies: First off, remember that the sabre tooth "tiger" isn't really a tiger, but a different form of cat. This is important, because the teeth of the different groups had an effect on the use. In a word, the teeth were most likely used for killing. Unlike the cats of today that kill by puncturing the neck vertebrae (small cats with small prey) or suffocating by clamping over the muzzle (large cats with large prey), sabre tooth cats couldn't have done thisthe big canines would have either gotten in the way or actually broken right off (there are a lot of fossils where this has happened anyway). Instead, the cats probably used the sabres to slash out the throats or bellies of their prey. You should also keep in mind that sabre tooth "cats" aren't just one species, but dozens, in several different families of mammals, including marsupials (Thylacosmilus), the modern cat family, and a few extinct groups of carnivorous mammals, the arctocyonids (hoofed predatorssee the picture of Andrewsarchus I put up), the creodonts (an extinct group of carnivores only somewhat related to modern carnivores) and the nimravids (cat-like animals with short tails. Of course, these descriptions are brief, and based on material that may be old now. But sabres show up a lot in mammal evolution.
Extractions: Martin B. Main Predation is a natural process whereby one animal, the predator, kills and eats another animal, the prey. Only animals that are strictly plant eaters are not considered predators. However, there are numerous other causes of animal deaths, including parasites, disease, poisonous plants, starvation, exposure to severe weather, ingestion of metal objects that penetrate the digestive tract, bloat, suffocation, lightning, and snake bite. Many predators will scavenge carcasses. Therefore, evidence of predators feeding on the carcasses of livestock does not serve as proof of predation. In general, livestock killed by predators will exhibit subcutaneous (beneath the skin) bruising and puncture wounds. Livestock that are already dead and are scavenged by coyotes and other potential predators do not exhibit bruising because their heart can no longer pump blood to the wound. Bruising beneath the skin, therefore, is a clear indication that predation has occurred. Other indications of predation include blood on the ground and with larger calves and sheep there may be evidence of a struggle, such as trampled and bloody vegetation. Individual species of predators often follow a general pattern of killing animals that helps to identify the culprit. However, some individuals within a species vary in the method of attack and feeding behavior. These behaviors may overlap between individuals of different species; thus other evidence, such as tracks and feces in the area of the carcass, are often essential to correctly identify the responsible predator.
