Extractions: Depending upon which book you pick up on the history of pigs, will determine how long they say they have been around. Some believe it is millions of years while yet others hold to the fact that pigs theyre part of creation. They do know that the first pigs theyre domesticated in Asia and the first book known about raising pigs was written by the Emperor Fo Hi of China. China still remains the leader in the number of different kinds of swine breeds with almost 200 different breeds ranging from small to large. You will find that most farms in China and Asia all have at least one pig. The reason behind this is that they are used for not only food, but to barter for much needed goods and baby piglets can be sold for cash and last but not least, the manure is used to fertilize gardens and fields for crops. Many Asian families keep potbellied pigs because, unlike the larger farm hog, potbellied pigs don't require as much food and are easier to maintain and they thrive well in that hot and humid climate. Because they are relatively small, they don't have to worry about refrigeration to store their meat, thus solving a major problem in outlying areas. The potbellied pig became almost extinct during the WWII famine in China. Some of the refugees brought some north with them and then in the 1950's some were brought into Europe for zoos. Then in the 1970's Keith Connell went to Europe to import unique pigs for the Canadian zoos. Then later they came to the United States and became household pets. Because of the strict import laws in the United States, the gene pool for the potbellied pig is still relatively small compared to their cousins, the farm hogs.

This first edition of the "dreamnight at the zoo" was especially for children with cancer. Onehundredseventyfive children were invited and they brought their mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. The Amsterdam Zoo joint this effort in and in Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen, Safaripark Beekse Bergen in Hilvarenbeek, de Apenheul in Apeldoorn en de Dierentuin van Amersfoort also organised an evening for chronically ill and disabled children. The event has not only grown in the number of zoos holding it, but also within the individual zoos. Rotterdam started with one hospital in 1996, in 2001 they welcomed children from 13 hospitals and institutions. In also the Noorden Dierenpark in Emmen, Dolfinarium Harderwijk, Burgers Zoo in Arnhem en Avifauna in Alphen aan den Rijn joined the initiative. The Antwerp Zoo (B) and the Aalborg Zoo (DK) were the first partners outside the Netherlands. Canada site July 24, 2001 OTTAWA Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), today announced that his department will coordinate development and implementation of standards for the care and maintenance of marine mammals in captivity, in cooperation with the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). The move comes in response to a report by Dr. Jon Lien of Memorial University, Newfoundland. Dr. Lien was commissioned by DFO to conduct a comprehensive review on live capture and captivity of marine mammals in Canada and its relevance to the departments role in marine mammal management. Dr. Lien submitted his report in April 1999. "I understand that the issue of capturing and keeping marine mammals in captivity is an emotional one, and of particular interest to all Canadians who recognize the need to appreciate and protect these animals," said Mr. Dhaliwal. "While Dr. Liens review acknowledged the benefits of live capture and gave qualified support for marine mammals in aquariums, it also pointed out specific deficiencies and provided recommendations on how to improve marine mammal management in some key areas. "Therefore I have asked my officials to work with the CCAC and CAZA to develop standards that would address Dr. Liens concerns and provide public assurance for the well-being of these animals. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Lien has agreed to remain actively involved in assisting the department in the development of the standards," added Mr. Dhaliwal. "I am hoping to receive the interim guidelines next year and have the final guidelines in place within two years."

Canadian zoo critic Rob Laidlaw, a chartered biologist and project manager with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), recently returned from Java where his organization is campaigning to improve animal welfare standards for zoo animals. Reports Laidlaw: "The state of Indonesia's zoos is absolutely appalling. Barren, undersized cages are the norm. We're talking about the kind of menagerie-style, steel bar, and concrete floor enclosures that were common in Western zoos more than 100 years ago but have long since been consigned to the scrap heap of history by progressive zoos. The accommodation is grossly substandard in most cases, and the general level of care is just as bad. There doesn't seem to be any understanding of the biological and behavioural needs of captive animals."
