The statistics released by the Canadian Cancer Society indicates cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death in the country by 2010. “This disease is taking a huge toll on Canadians personally. It’s straining our healthcare system and it’s going to get worse as our population ages. Canada urgently needs to implement a national coordinated strategy to fight cancer", said Dr. Barbara Whylie, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Cancer Society in a letter on the CCS website. In general the results indicate that death rates declined differently for males and females and that the rate of mortality decline was not constant over age or over time. Consequently, human numbers and demands continue to grow and fuel the deterioration of the web of life on Earth. We must develop a new sense of ethics that involves confronting our instinctive expansionist drives and our disregard for non-human forms of life.

Canada registered a population growth of about 1.16 million people between 1996 and 2001. At just over 30 million inhabitants, the country remains one of the most sparsely populated in the world. The report noted that there have been only two other periods in which the population grew this slowly: during the Depression of the 1930s and the period between 1981 and 1986. It added that the low increase between 1981 and 1986 was due to exceptionally low levels of immigration - unlike the current situation.
