Be sure to check back here often because we plan to refresh these images on a regular basis. Travel Folders #4 October 1st, 2003 Despite its relatively small size, the New Haven was one of the most heavily passenger oriented railroads in the country. In fact, during the modern era, only the commuter heavy Long Island Railroad derived a greater proportion of revenue from passenger service. Over the years the New Haven published a huge variety of advertising folders to promote passenger travel. What follows are a small selection of typical New Haven Railroad travel folders. All items from the collection of Marc Frattasio The Pilgrim Tours were the New Haven's all expense paid tour packages. Pilgrim Tours were administered from the New Haven Railroad Travel Bureau in New York's Grand Central Terminal. They operated not only within New England but also to many locations outside the New Haven's direct service territory via connections with other railroads. This Pilgrim Tours folder dates from 1950. This 1953 travel folder presents discounted weekend excursion fares to New York City from various points on the New Haven Railroad. The special discounted excursion fares were intended to help grow the passenger travel business during the weekends, when trains often ran under-capacity.

Extractions: Main October 03, 2003 Scientists explain cookies Now it can be told: Why the cookie crumbles Scientists in Britain have discovered why biscuits seem to break so easily. Using sophisticated laser techniques, physicists at the University of Loughborough, in the north of England, found that a biscuit develops "fault lines" a few hours after it comes out of the oven. As it cools down, it picks up moisture around the rim, causing it to expand while at the same time, moisture at the centre makes it contract. The result is a build-up of strain forces which pulls the biscuit apart, making them vulnerable when handled, moved or packaged. Posted by Diane at 04:52 PM August 23, 2003 Saturday afternoon Sophia put herself down for a nap this afternoon. Demanded to nap, in fact. What you may not know is that not only has this never happened before, but I did such poor sleep scheduling with her that I became dependent on using the car to make her nap. But when she's tired, she can put herself down for a nap. Go check out This Woman's Work But what about the Oompa-Loompas?
Extractions: Today's Globe Politics Opinion Education ... News MONTREAL (Reuters) - Crossing the U.S.-Canada border to go to church on a Sunday cost a U.S. citizen $10,000 for breaching Washington's tough new security rules. ADVERTISEMENT The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, a resident of rural Maine who lives so close to the Canadian border the U.S. customs office is right next door to his house. Like the other half-dozen residents of Township 15 Range 15, crossing the border is a daily ritual for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and pray. There are many such situations in rural areas along the largely unguarded 8,900-km (5,530-mile) border between Canada and the United States which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the United States after attending mass in Canada, as usual. The local U.S. customs station is closed on Sundays, so he just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security.

For all of you people (mainly Americans!) who think that Wales is just a town in Alaska I've got some bad news for you - Wales is actually a country! If you want to know where it is look at a map or Great Britain (or to Americans, look at a map of what you call England). The bit jutting out on the left hand side about half way up is Wales . The bit at the top is Scotland and the rest is England.

An expatriate Canadian, working as an international civil servant in Austria for 28 years, I frequently spend time in the Austrian countryside. Last weekend, I spend two nights in a quaint hotel south of Graz... In an upstairs lounge, a small pillow caught my eye because of a Royal Artillery insignia . The embroidery is sewn to the pillow cover made of what I think is a piece of military issue, olive drab, blanket. The owners have few clues to its origin. Either it was sewn by an Allied prisoner, or following the war, by a German or Austrian soldier incarcerated in the same camp. I have attached a photo thereof ... The hotel, the proprietor of which is named Harkamp, can be found at
Extractions: June 2001 Lindsay Skinner reports that there was an excellent turnout in Wellington for the unveiling of the Artillery Plaque at the National War Memorial by Lady Thornton. The Horowhenua Artillery Association took a busload down from Levin. The plaque includes 4,5,6,17, and 38th Field Regiments, 28 Heavy AA Regt, 14 and 29th Light AA Regt, 7 Anti Tank Regt and 33rd Heavy Regt. The address by the Col Comdt, Brig Ray Andrews, was well received and there were refreshments afterwards at HMS Olphert. Following this, Lindsay joined the Old Comrades Association for Gunners' Day lunch at the Hutt RSA where many old acquantances were renewed. A good representation at both venues of both past and present gunners.

Extractions: Shanghai Star. 2004-02-19 Wailing wall JIANGSU - A middle school in Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu Province, plans to build what it calls a "vent" wall in the playground so their students can make up for the inferior state of the school's psychological health education, reports the Beijing Star Daily. When feeling depressed or angry, students can go to the wall to release aggression by beating it, thus "venting" their feelings. The school says such acts should help students to alleviate the stress caused by study as well as frustrating human relations which children of their age may find difficult to handle. Some experts, however, have expressed concern that this approach may simply reinforce the students' violent tendencies. Fine record HELSINKI - Finnish richest man, Jussi Salonoja, 27, who was caught driving 50 miles per hour in a 25mph zone, has been fined a record 170,000 euros ($217,000) for speeding through the centre of the capital. Finnish traffic fines vary according to the offender's income and, according to tax office data, Salonoja's 2002 earnings were close to 7 million euros. The final penalty could still change when the case is eventually heard by a Helsinki court, as was the case with Nokia executive Anssi Vanjoki, whose 116,000-euro speeding fine was slashed by 95 per cent due to a drop in income.
