Pauline Johnson Identity Page Although Pauline was an Indian according to the canadian government because her father Nativepeople by showing all Native cultures incorrectly as one culture. http://www.humanities.mcmaster.ca/~pjohnson/native.html
Extractions: The Mohawk name Pauline Johnson used, "Tekahionwake" , means "double wampum" or "double life" in the Mohawk language. It is a fitting name because in a way, Pauline led a double life. Although Pauline was an Indian according to the Canadian government because her father was a Mohawk, the environment of Chiefswood where she grew up was largely non-Native. At the same time, Pauline thought of herself as purely Native. She even called white people "palefaces". Pauline could and did fit into the white world, but found that she had to assert her Native identity when she was in white society. Because of the "double" life she lived, Pauline had to deal with non-Native people who did not understand her Native heritage. Some non-Native people even thought that Natives were wild savages. These people were sometimes puzzled by her "civilized" manner. On a trip home from England, she met a woman from New York City who complained about English customs: "Why, when I asked for ice water," she said, "they looked at me as if I were a North American Indian savage!" "Do you know, that's just the way they looked at me, " observed Miss Johnson, quietly. The Yankee [a slang word for American] stared at her. "Say, Miss Johnson, was your father a real wild Red Indian?" she asked. "Yes, a full-blooded Indian," was the smiling answer. "Excuse me, but you don't look a bit like it!" observed the other lady, and her tone made Miss Johnson ask quickly, "And was your father a real white man?" "Why, yes!" exclaimed the Yankee. "Excuse me, but I'm equally surprised!" said Pauline.
