    Extractions: by Roanne Fife In recent years, refugees and other uprooted peoples have faced increased public hostility, more restrictive government policies, and an absence of international will to address the causes of their plight. These causes include displacement by war, persecution, environmental devastation, development and economic disparity. The World Council of Churches has designated 1997 as an Ecumenical Year of Churches in Solidarity with Uprooted People. Across the world and within Canada, church communities are seeking to better understand the desperate situation faced by people uprooted from their homes, to stand in solidarity with them, and to find ways of alleviating both the causes and the consequences of their situation. This initiative has been supported by both the Canadian Council of Churches and Canadian Yearly Meeting. The question for local faith communities and concerned individuals is, "How do we best demonstrate our solidarity?" Quaker Meetings have often sponsored a refugee as a concrete way to support uprooted people. While sponsorship remains vital, changes to government regulations and procedures has made sponsorship increasingly difficult or impossible for most meetings. There are, however, many other ways of showing solidarity, including:

How true is this accusation? In How Silent were the Churches? Canadian Protestantism and the Jewish Plight During the Nazi Era (Wilfred Laurier University Press), Alan Davies and Marilyn Nefsky sift through the evidence and reach similar conclusions. Davies, an ordained United Church minister, is a professor of religion at the University of Toronto, while Nefsky teaches sociology and religion at the University of Lethbridge. Their book, a fair and balanced examination of Canada's Protestant sects, is based on official documents. The United Church, the largest Protestant denomination, deplored anti-Semitism in Germany, and its leaders attended rallies to protest Nazi outrages, particularly Kristallnacht. But as a "religious community," the United Church was not only silent, but condoned conversionary efforts aimed at Jews. And one of its leading liberals, Claris Silcox, a champion of Jewish refugees, favored Jewish quotas in Canadian medical schools.

    Extractions: By David Horrox Canadian culture is becoming more secular and is characterized by a greater belief in relative rather than absolute truth, a decline in traditional beliefs, behaviours, families and communities. Canada's ceremony on Parliament Hill, after the events in New York on September 11, 2001,was telling. God's name was not uttered, and prayer, hymn singing or reading from scripture of any religion were absent. This stems presumably from the belief that, if such activities took place, someone, somehow, somewhere might be offended. Although Canadian churches believe that it has the answer or humanity's problems in the message of Jesus Christ, its message is largely ignored. Faith is now a totally private matter. Allowing for Stockwell Day's shortcomings as a national leader, the ridicule to which he was subjected in the last federal election for his offence of holding Christian beliefs and, perish the thought, actually being influenced by them, clearly demonstrated the hostility towards religion, particularly the Christian religion, in our public square. Faced with an increasingly secular outlook, Canadian churches have struggled to cope with changes that they do not fully understand. To some, Canadian churches have aped the surrounding culture, with ministers becoming marketing professionals shaping religious doctrines to the needs or perceived needs of Canadians. Church language, once distinct, has become laden with secular slogans. Programs proliferate to meet the perceived needs of church members, with Bible studies in some churches concentrating on such subjects as "How God can make you a winner." The prosperity gospel, in its crassest form, reflects our materialistic, consumer-driven society. The church seems more marginalized and irrelevant to more and more Canadians, and in sharp decline in its capacity to influence the trends in our society.

This alliance of Anglican Primates has heard the plight of those who have been in a state of ‘impaired communion’ with their own diocese since the decision to bless same-sex unions was handed down in June of 2002—a divisive and unprecedented move that was vigorously denounced throughout the Anglican Communion. Primates from Central Africa, the Congo, Rwanda and South East Asia have extended an offer of “Temporary Adequate Episcopal Oversight” to those who, because of religious conscience, have requested it. The offer effectively allows those congregations and clergy to remain connected to the global Anglican Communion. This temporary and emergency offer of assistance by four international Anglican leaders insulates these churches and clergy in Canada from the often abusive power structures that have worked against them for the last 20 months. Bishop Michael Ingham of the Diocese of New Westminster has already closed one church and brought significant pressure against the others because of their stand for the orthodox Christian faith and their desire for oversight from an alternative bishop and renewed structures.

"In Canada, Aboriginal women continue to be targets of hatred and violence based on their gender and race," the United Church of Canada said in a document about the initiative. The campaign - called Sisters in Spirit - will be launched in Canada's capital, Ottawa, on 22 March by the United and Anglican churches, and the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC). "We want to start documenting the women who have gone missing or been murdered," said Terri Brown, the NWAC's president. "We will be doing a lot of education work in schools, community centres, churches, wherever we can educate people about the racism and the sexism that Aboriginal women face in the country." The campaign aims to persuade the Canadian government to establish a CN$10 million (US$7.5 million) fund for research and education related to violence against Aboriginal women - women who belong to Indian, Meti or Inuit communities in Canada.

A judge has sentenced prominent Alabama trial lawyer Garve Ivey to 30 days in jail after a jury convicted him on misdemeanor charges arising out of a smear campaign against the state’s Lieutenant Governor, Steve Windom (see Sept. 1 and Aug. 26 , 1999). Shortly before the 1998 election , with Windom running a hard-fought race against a trial lawyer-backed opponent, a former prostitute and heroin addict named Melissa Myers Bush stepped forward with a lawsuit dramatically charging that Windom had raped and beat her seven years earlier when she worked for an escort service. Ivey, who was serving at the time as an official of the state trial lawyers association, paid to have 300 copies made of a videotape of Bush describing her charges, "which were distributed to news outlets across the state”. But as questions arose, Bush soon recanted and said she'd been paid to tell her story and that it was false. According to later testimony at trial, Bush accepted $2,700 from Birmingham businessman Scott Nordness, money that was later reimbursed by Ivey. Nordness was granted immunity by prosecutors seeking his testimony and charges were filed against Ivey and a private investigator who'd worked with him, Wes Chappell. Update: in July 2001 the Alabama Supreme Court reversed these convictions and ordered Ivey acquitted of the charges (see

Depending on how church size is defined, the United Church of Canada is either the largest or next to largest Protestant denomination: About 3.1 million Canadians identify themselves with the United Church of Canada The church reports 684,000 confirmed members. Fewer (about 2.2 million) Canadians identify themselves as Anglicans, However, the church reports 737,000 confirmed members more than the United Church. This is the most liberal of the larger Protestant denominations in Canada. It is exceeded in size only by the Roman Catholic church . It was formed in 1925 by a merger of most congregations of the Association of Congregational Churches in Canada , the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church in Canada . Some Presbyterian congregations remained part of a separate mainline religious organization; some Methodists split off to form the very conservative Free Methodist church. From its birth, it has had to accommodate a diversity of theological beliefs. It has had a history of tackling publicly the really tough social issues. Some cynics might say that they have a continual urge to shoot themselves in the foot, or to form a circular firing squad. It can be argued that they lose membership whenever they enter into one of these debates. But they have also gained members, partly because of the respect that Canadians have for the Church's courage, openness, and inclusiveness. Less courageous liberal and mainline denominations often follow where the United Church has led.
