Constitutional monarchy means that a monarchy (a King or Queen) reigns according to the limits imposed by a countrys Constitution. Thus, in Canadas case, the monarchy of Britain (presently Queen Elizabeth II) rules Canada. As in most republics, a constitutional monarchy's executive authority is vested in the head of state. Though the king or queen may be regarded as the government's symbolic head, it is the Prime Minister who actually governs the country. Extractions: The Constitution of Canada declares that the Government of Canada and the Command in Chief of the Forces are vested in the Queen. Her Majesty is one of three parts of the Parliament of Canada (Queen, Senate and Commons). She is Sovereign of the Order of Canada, Sovereign of the Order of Military Merit, Colonel-in-Chief of numerous units of the Canadian Forces, Honorary Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Patron of many institutions and organisations in various walks of Canadian life. The Canadian statute entitled The Interpretation Act clearly defines the Crown. It says: "...'the Crown' means the Sovereign of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories, and Head of the Commonwealth". Canada Has Always Been A Monarchy From the days of earliest settlement the only form of society Canadians have known has been a monarchy. The native people themselves had a tribal idea of kingship. Our tradition of monarchy was French and British and became, as it now is, distinctly Canadian. In 1867 Canadians freely and deliberately reaffirmed their allegiance to the Monarchy. They have done so at each subsequent stage in their political development. Monarchy Or Republic The Queen of Canada is more democratic than a President of Canada ever could be because she represents all Canadians. An elected president would owe his selection to a political faction, and this would publicly divide him from many of his countrymen and would make his claim to represent "the people" less convincing. Frequent selections of presidents would interrupt the continuity essential for an effective head of our country. The Queen and her heirs have been trained from birth for one vocation that of discharging the duties of sovereign of Canada. Therefore, they are the only Canadians fit to assume this important position.

The Sovereign canada s constitutional monarchy. canada has long been a monarchy under the kings of France in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries http://www.churchillsociety.org/sovereign.htm
Extractions: Canada's Constitutional Monarchy Canada has long been a monarchy - under the kings of France in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, under the British Crown in the 18th and 19th centuries, and as a kingdom in our own right from Confederation in 1867 onward. As Canadians, we offer our allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty was proclaimed Queen of Canada by the Canadian Parliament on February 6, 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI. Her ancestors (direct and indirect) were the 32 kings and queens who had reigned over our country since Henry VII and Francois I. These monarchs brought about the discovery, exploration, settlement, defence and development of Canada. A lthough she is the Queen 15 other countries, she is, quite separately, sovereign of Canada by deliberate choice of Canadians. She is also the Head of the Commonwealth, which is made up of 51 independent sovereign states including Canada. In Canada's constitutional monarchy the Sovereign personifies the state and is the personal symbol of allegiance, unity and authority for all Canadians. Federal and provincial legislators, Cabinet ministers, public servants, military personnel, and new citizens at Canadian citizenship ceremonies, all swear allegiance to The Queen (not to a flag or constitution). Canada's Constitution vests the executive powers of Canada in The Queen (although her representatives act on the advice of ministers responsible to the House of Commons or the legislative assemblies of the provinces). This explains why elections are called and laws are promulgated in The Queen's name
Extractions: I told the journalist that as the Prince holds no constitutional position here, it would have been gracious, but not essential, for the Premier to see him. But given the election, it was for the Premier to decide his priorities, and we did not condemn him for that. So there was no story. (Had I condemned the Premier, it would certainly have been reported.) Peter Charlton (19 November 2002) is wrong. The ARM did target the monarchy during the referendum, but this tactic just did not work. And Australians do prefer their constitutional system. In that respect, they are little different from their Canadian cousins. When they were asked whether they supported the constitutional monarchy the result was overwhelmingly 73% support in Quebec to 87% in Atlantic Canada. If Australians were asked that question, rather than about a vague and undefined republic, the result would be similar.
