Community History, Culture and Travel Tips by Amanda Nourse and Glenn Weinreb Home Travel Traveling Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia : Cambodia The Lonely Planet Cambodia travel guide, or similar book, is a must have for all travelers. We will provide a very brief summary of the information contained in this book, supplemented with many photos and personal reflections. Cambodia suffered from war and political instability during much of the later half of the 20th Century. As of 2002, it is quite safe, provided you don't wander off into the jungle by yourself. For details concerning safety, please see http://travel.state.gov/cambodia.html. Cambodia's infrastructure is quite primitive due to the war. Businesses in the later half of the 20th century invested very little since they did not want to build factories that would later get shot up. Subsequently, very little money was spent on infrastructure to support a modern economy. Roads, rail, telephone, banking, water, electricity, small package shipping, and heavy container shipping are severally lacking. Yet Cambodia, which is now a democracy, is quickly rebuilding. The 20th century Cambodian history is quite complex. In summary, they had some civil war problems between 1970 and 1995. In 1975, the crazy communist Khmer Rouge took over and told everyone in the capital city of Phnom Penh to evacuate the city and march into the country to lead an agrarian life. The idea here is that educated folks are synonymous with capitalism and internationalism, both of which are bad and must be destroyed. This notion echoes the 1949 to 1976 communist leader of China, Mao Tse-tung who was a known opium addict (with opium ideas?). Sounds crazy? It is. To make a long story short, the Khmer, after killing 1M people in a 7M person country, were beaten back by the Vietnamese and some other folks; and Cambodia is now a free market, multiparty, democracy.

SCHWARTZ / Specialto The Press-Enterprise CAMBODIAN TEMPLE The Khmer Buddhist Society of San Bernardino operates a small temple for Cambodians at 1595 Hardt St. Information: SAN BERNARDINO - From early morning until late afternoon, the residents of a small San Bernardino house are engaged in chanting, prayer and meditation. While the home's exterior blends seamlessly into its residential neighborhood, its interior reflects the occupants' homeland far away. The building houses the Khmer Buddhist Society of San Bernardino, where Cambodian monks tend to the rites of the temple that has been created in the converted, single-story house. At the back of the building, a large community room has a spacious seating area, with an elaborate shrine at one end. A large golden Buddha is set at the center of the shrine, flanked by many smaller Buddha images, all from Cambodia. Incense sticks, flowers, candles and other adornments rest nearby. For more than a decade, orange-robed monks have tended the shrine and provided a gathering place for local Cambodians, who number about 2,700 in San Bernardino County, according to temple records. California has the largest population of Cambodians in the United States, more than 84,000.

Extractions: worldarchiv.com best view 1024X768 please click on the picture for larger view The capital still retains an undeniable charm despite its tumultuous and often violent past. The crumbling colonial architecture makes an attractive backdrop to bustling streetside cafes and the redeveloped riverfront precinct - a particularly lively part of town on Friday and Saturday nights. The city has several impressive wats (temple-monasteries), including Wat Ounalom (headquarters of the Cambodian Buddhist patriarchate), Wat Phnom (the hilltop pagoda which gave the city its name) and the newly painted Wat Lang Ka. Pride of place goes to the spectacular Silver Pagoda, one of the few places in Cambodia where artefacts embodying the brilliance and richness of Khmer culture were preserved by the Khmer Rouge (although only 40% of its former glories were 'preserved'). The National Museum is another highlight, with outstanding displays of Khmer crafts. The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are a grisly reminder of the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge. Some 17,000 people were killed here, just 15km south-west of the city centre, and more than 8000 skulls, arranged by sex and age, are visible behind the glass panel of the Memorial Stupa, which was erected in 1988. Prior to their murder, the victims had been detained at the prison known as S-21, housed in the Tuol Svay Prey High School. Today, the Tuol Sleng Museum serves as testament to the crimes of the Khmer Rouge, and few details of each victim's torture and death are left to the imagination.
