Sea Grant News Media Center - California: Genetic Engineering Department of Pediatrics at the school of Medicine education, and extension services at california s colleges and the Sea Grant National media Relations Office http://www.seagrantnews.org/news/cagenes.html
Extractions: LaJolla, CA. Modified viral particles (called retroviral vectors) have been used for the first time to alter the genes of a marine invertebrate. Using principles developed in a California Sea Grant project, Dr. Jane C. Burns, M.D., of the Department of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine, University of California, San Diego, genetically modified the dwarf surfclam, Mulinia lateralis. Results of the experiment, a collaboration between Burns and Thomas Chen, Ph.D., director of the University of Connecticut's Biotechnology Center, are published in the April 16 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "This work may provide a new tool for marine biologists to use against the diseases that attack commercial stocks of oysters, clams, mussels, and abalone," Burns says. Once the genes responsible for protecting cultured shellfish from disease have been identified, retroviral vectors could be used to deliver these protective genes directly to brood stock. Development of the retroviral vectors began in the early 1990s at UCSD's Center for Molecular Genetics under the direction of Jiing-Kuan Yee, Ph.D., and Theodore Friedmann, M.D. There Burns worked to improve the ability of altered viruses to carry foreign genes into non-mammalian cells.
