Extractions: Boarding Schools or Concentration Camps? The end of the Gold Rush era signaled a change in U.S. policy towards Native people. Instead of directly killing California indigenous people, reservations were created and indigenous people were re-located to them. The children were taken, often by force, away from their parents and to far-away re-education centers. Children as young as four attended these re-education centers. They were forced to cut their hair and give up their clothing upon arrival. The purpose for these re-education centers was to destroy Indian children and Indian cultures and create American children. By 1890, it was becoming too expensive for the United States Army to hunt down and kill indigenous people-it was easier and less costly to lie to Native people to get them to stop fighting for survival, then steal their children and take them thousands of miles away to re-educate them by force. This alternative to physical termination of a people has been copied by many regimes throughout history, among them Nazi Germany. In northern California, children were often taken to boarding schools located in Riverside, Ca., and to various places in Oregon. A re-education center in Hoopa Valley near Fort Gaston also housed many local indigenous children as recently as 1932. An unidentified Yurok elder gave an account of boarding school life in Sweet Tears and Bitter Pills.

Extractions: By Carla Rivera An apartment complex in Montclair housed students at the military- style academy, which is accused of abuse. Police in Montclair removed more than two dozen youths from a private military-style boarding school Tuesday, after a former employee and several former residents accused operators of administering abusive punishment. In an early morning raid, 26 youths were taken from an apartment complex used as a residence by the Ministerial Christian Academy. Investigators with search warrants confiscated handcuffs, shackles, computers, financial records and other documents, police said. Ricky Leslie, 39, of Montclair, described by police as a caretaker at the residence, was arrested on suspicion of rape with a foreign object and sexual battery of a female student. Police said Leslie is a registered sex offender. Police were led to the two-story apartment complex on a quiet street by accusations that youngsters had been restrained in handcuffs, left for hours in cramped, darkened storage rooms and forced into a cold swimming pool as punishments. The owners of the academy, Otis McIntyre, 47, and Doris McIntyre, 61, of

Extractions: by George and Roger Emanuels Saint Mary's Hall for Young Ladies was described by one writer one hundred years ago. She wrote, "Dr. Ver Mehr's school was the finest educational establishment north of San Francisco Bay." After founding Grace Chapel in San Francisco, the Rev. J.L. Ver Mehr, Episcopalian, moved to Sonoma and opened the school on September 1, 1853 in the Fitch house, a one-story adobe facing the west side of the broad plaza in Sonoma. Tragedy struck three years later when four of Ver Mehr's nine children died of diphtheria. The remaining family returned to San Francisco where they survived two major fires. Next, Cumberland College served day and boarding students from December 1857, administered by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. By 1858 the school occupied the El Dorado Hotel, the one-story adobe built by Salvador Vallejo in 1844. A second floor was added soon after as a dormitory for boarding students. Ninety-nine students were enrolled in the 1861 class. Boarders paid $4.50 per week plus the cost of candles burned, and $1.00 per week for laundry. Recently discovered newspaper clippings of the era report that two Cumberland day students, brother and sister, died within two weeks. They were Henrietta and Willie Walker, children of Sonoma physician Dr. E.D. Walker. The writer reports "seven dear voices swelling the music in heaven from one household."
