Don't Scuttle City's Maritime History Elected officials, business leaders and preservationists are meeting found pictures of Nick Fields, ed Fields and Seattle has activities today that teach young http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/171454_firstperson03.html
Extractions: GUEST COLUMNIST A veteran sailor told me a story about a man lost at sea and the lost man's brother. Nick and Ed Fields sailed from Seattle to the Bering Sea aboard the schooner Wawona in 1941 to fish for cod. The two men hauled hundreds of 20-pound fish aboard one-man boats and brought them to Wawona. One day, Ed returned to his ship but Nick did not. Ed waited for his brother but all the crew found was a strip of Nick's flannel shirt hanging off his capsized boat. Nick's body was not recovered. Dave Wright, the sailor who told me this story, was on the ship with Ed that day. I asked Dave how Ed took his loss. "Well," Dave said, "it's pretty hard to know what a man is thinking." In other words, Ed kept to himself. The same could be said for what Seattle thinks about the loss of its maritime history. Seattle, as a community, spoke very little when the ferry Kalakala departed on March 9. Ed Fields could not speak about his shock, sadness and loss. Seattle's silence appears to be simple indifference. But it's hard to know.

Extractions: Virtual Communities for Elementary and Secondary Schools Learning Circles are virtual communities that have no fixed locations or time zones. In part a Learning Circle is group conversation carried over electronic mail in slow motion. But what happens online is only half the story. The other half is what takes place in the classroom as a direct result of either the sending or receiving of information. The virtual and real classrooms are inseparable. The participants in a Learning Circle work together on a set of projects which they summarize for their Circle publication, a booklet or newspaper. Learning Circles enable students from different cultures, regions, religions, ages, perspectives, and with a range of physical and mental strengths to work together in a medium that treats diversity as a resource. During the introductory phase students provide a profile of themselves, their school and their community for their partners. These descriptions like this one from Alaska give life to our diverse social arrangements. Sheldon Point School (Alaska) has 5 classrooms, with a total of 45 students in grades 1-12, most of whom are Yupik Eskimos. We live in a small village of less than 300 people on an area of about one square mile isolated from other locations by the rugged terrain. We drive snowmobiles to school. The school is the chief source of jobs in the community and families hunt, trap, and fish.

Purdue Farm Supply Game The model represents a hypothetical farm supply store that sells four products: The game is played a total of six quarters and decisions are made each quarter. Participants are divided into teams of four, and each participant chooses one of four available jobs: Up to six stores compete in a rural market. Normally, three are used with undergraduate students. The number of stores is dictated by the number of participants when used with Extension audiences. All teams begin the game with identical balance sheets, and all earnings remain in the firm as retained earnings. After each decision, students receive four reports:

The consequences of insisting upon the university's high moral mission come out most clearly in Barbara Ehrenreich's commentary, which is worth quoting at length: From the above considerations, two main trends emerge as possibilities for the future of employment in U.S. higher education. On the one hand, its institutions may remain recognizable albeit with an expansion of vocational education in community colleges, a restriction of access to downsized four-year colleges, and, among teachers throughout the system, a hardening of divisions between the haves and have-nots along the tenure-line. The upside of this first scenario, from the point of view of capital, is that, for students and teachers alike, it retains some of the social-control functions served by higher education even if equal opportunity and class mobility appear increasingly as mirages on an ever-receding horizon. The downside, however, is that, even with the continued devaluation of tenured professors' salaries that would surely accompany this trend, it would still carry a significant price tag.

The vocational business curriculum dictated a year of Typewriting I at the freshman level, a year of Typewriting II at the sophomore level, a year of Office Practice and Shorthand I at the junior level, and a year of Secretarial Practice and Shorthand II at the senior level. This curriculum was adhered to by the majority of schools as the objective of business education was vocational in nature. The introduction of the personal computer changed the business education curriculum and the method in which typewriting instruction was delivered. Computers allowed students to become more efficient as they keyed letters, memos, reports, and tables within the business education classroom. Soon, other disciplines began to take advantage of the efficiency and effectiveness of computers.English teachers required typed papers in English Composition class, and mathematics teachers used BASIC programming to expand on paper and pencil problems. A new class, Computer Literacy, appeared in school curricula and eventually achieved the status of a "required" course. Business teachers believed they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach Computer Literacy, but were soon faced with science and math teachers who also felt they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach this course.

This week, Education World offers four lessons to help get them started on the road to financial responsibility! According to Youth and Money , a 1999 study conducted by the American Savings Education Council , fewer than half of U.S. high school and college students have a regular savings plan. Only about one-fourth of those students stick to a budget, and more than one-third don't keep track of their spending at all.
