Extractions: Cast: Joseph Kumbela, Marie Bunel, Aoua Sangare Colour, 35mm, in French with English subtitles. 90 mins. IDERA Film and Video and Pacific Cinematheque present an evening exploring two different "realities" of Africa: the one typically represented by the media, the other offered by Burundi filmmaker L*once Ngabo in Gito, the Ungrateful . Which is more accurate? Gito, the Ungrateful , one of the most popular African films of recent years, is a hilarious cross-cultural comedy about an African man who must choose between two women, two careers, two countries. It offers a wonderful, warm portrait of a continent where people laugh, of a countryside filled with great beauty. The media's picture of Africa is very different: a continent mired in war and horror. Burundi is billed as a genocide-in-waiting, as the next Rwanda. Press reports have portrayed the conflicts in both those countries as primarily ethnic and tribal, Hutu against Tutsi, and virtually ignored the roles of colonialism and the global economy in the strife. Following the screening, IDERA will offer a presentation on media literacy, demonstrating techniques for identifying, analyzing, and deconstructing negative media images. Representatives of the media will be invited to participate in a discussion, and audience members will be encouraged to join in.

Extractions: SUMMER, 1998: Volume 3 Issue 2 Report on African Great Lakes Initiative by Dave Zarembka As of the end of April, the response to Friends Peace Teams Project's initiative-developing an alliance with African Quakers to introduce the essence of the peacemaking programs of Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), Children's Creative Response to Conflict (CCRC), and Help Increase the Peace Project (HIPP) in the Great Lakes Region of Africa-has been extremely positive. We have been delighted to hear about the project of sending an exploration team to our region to see what the Peace Teams can do. This is exactly what has been our vision since our country, Burundi, entered into a crisis. David Niyonzima As can be expected, those people who are trainers in the various programs have been the most positive, with many willing to pack their bags and go right on over. Africans residing in the United States, both Quaker and non-Quaker, have also been positive in their response. Friends World Committee for Consultation in London responded with a list of about sixty people, including individuals from all fourteen yearly meetings in Kenya and Tanzania, who needed to receive a copy of the exploration proposal. These letters were sent out at the beginning of April, all by regular mail so that expatriates who frequently have access to e-mail would not be at an advantage to those who do not, including most Africans.
