Extractions: This is by far one of the best biographies I've read in recent times. Not only is the subject matter astonishing, capturing the life of one of the most exciting figures of the 19th century, the author focuses on the man's profuse writings, thankfully leaving out the once fashionable psychoanalytic approach of interpretation when writing biography. This is the third life history I've read on Richard Burton, and it's certainly the finest written and the most thorough. Those of you, who are not familiar with R.F. Burton, are in for a thrilling reading experience. This man, probably more so than Byron himself, is the archetypal Byronic figure of the age: a linguist, (29 languages and numerous dialects), scholar of eastern literature and religion, particularly the mystical arm of Islam, Sufi; a practicing mystic; explorer of Africa (co-discoverer of the source of the Nile); a secret agent working for her majesty during England's acquisition of India's wealth, known to historians as 'The Great Game'. He was also one of the first white men, who made the Pilgrimage to Mecca, and as Rice argues, Burton was and continued to be a practicing Muslim, therefore his pilgrimage was deeply religious as well as a journey of danger and adventure. Burton was dashing, an expert swordsman and horseman, and a prolific writer, poet and translator who rank as one of the best of his time.

JUMP TO BOOKS There are numerous sites on the Web devoted to Burton, as well as many easily accessible books detailing his life and accomplishments there's no point in repeating such things here, beyond a few facts to jar the reader's memory he was captain in the Bombay Army; co-discoverer of the source of the White Nile with John Hanning Speke; British consul on the island of Fernando Po off the coast of Equatorial Guinea; at Damascus, Syria; at Trieste, Austria-Hungary and at Santos, Brazil. He was one of the most important linguists of his day, giving a well-received direct-from-Arabic English translation of the Arabian Nights in 16 volumes; original translator of the Kama Sutra ; expert swordsman; knighthood (1886) and a hundred other accomplishments, truly a 19th-Century Western Man in the best sense of the term. But then the 20th-Century came along, with its Stalinist "PC" cleansing of old works of history, which attempted to obliterate what I present here. There's another side, the suppressed, expurgated and censored side, that needs to be brought into the light. The following essays or chapters have been suppressed for various reasons Victorian prudishness and political reasons predominantly.

Extractions: Burton, although born in England, was raised in numerous European towns and received an irregular education. He had a reputation as one of the best swordsmen in Europe, and was known for his experience with alcohol and prostitutes. By the time he entered the University of Oxford, he could already speak Italian, Greek and Latin, and continued on to learn Arabic on his own initiative. Although popular with his peers, Burton disliked England and was expelled from Oxford for a breach of conduct in 1842. At this point he joined the eighteenth regiment of the Bombay Native Infantry, where his proficiency with languages facilitated his rise through the ranks, and his acquisition of more than twelve additional languages. Over the years he became fluent in twenty-five languages and fifteen dialects. He worked in Sind, India for seven years, learning many native customs and eventually adopting several Islamic principles. Burton documented his experiences when he returned to England in 1846 after contracting cholera, but the books sold poorly, possibly due to their encyclopedic style. Burton introduced many issues foreign to Victorian England and emphasized that Western culture could learn the practices of others; however his writings on Eastern and African cultures could at times be quite disparaging.

Extractions: If this man had never existed, Hollyweird could do a movie of some of his exploits and it would be considered over the top. He was fully a man both of his era and beyond it. His time in Africa alone was amazing, despite the fact that he and his fellow travelers did not find the source of the Nile river. That said, this is one of the better overall biographies of Sir Burton. The author has a good feel for the overall tone and prejuidices of the era and how Sir Burton did not fit in in polite English society. How much did I like this book, well I had read it years ago and decided I had to have a copy to keep. If true history with all its faults and wonders is something you enjoy, you need to read this book. For all that, I didnt even mention that he was an extraordinarily talented linquist as well as an author.

He was appointed the Viceroy of India by King Emmanuel in 1509. He forcibly destroyed the Indian city of Calicut in January, 1510, and took Goa (in southern India) in March, 1510, claiming Goa for Portugal. BATTUTA, ABU ABDULLAH IBN Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta [also spelled Buttuta] (1303-1365), was a Moroccan explorer who traveled through Africa, the Middle East, and parts of the Far East. A Muslim, he set off on a Hajj (a pilgrimage to the holy town of Mecca) from Tangier, Africa, in 1325 and traveled for almost three decades, covering over 75,000 miles (120,700 km) by boat and over land. He did sail his own boat, but was a passenger on many trading boats. In India, Buttuta was appointed a Magistrate of Delhi (1334-1341). He also traveled to China, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, and much of Africa. Buttuta later recorded his adventures in a popular book, "Travels (Rihala) of Ibn Battuta." He died in Fez, Morocco, in 1365.

Sir Richard Francis Burton And General Charles "Chinese" Gordon My Dear captain burton,. With kind regards to Mrs. burton and you, and the hopeyou will send me the manuscript,. Believe me,. sir richard francis burton. 125. http://www.miskatonic.org/history/burton-gordon.html
Extractions: Did Richard Burton and "Chinese" Gordon ever meet? I went through biographies of both men, and it appears that they corresponded for nine years but never met in person. Strangely, this is never actually stated, though it is incorrectly said in one book that they did meet. Gordon and Isabel Burton (who also exchanged letters for years) met twice, once in Suez in April 1878 and again in London in April 1880. Not much of their correspondence has been published. All the biographies quote letters from The Romance of Isabel Lady Burton , and Lovell also briefly quotes a couple of letters in Isabel's papers at the Wiltshire Country Records Office that were only recently discovered. I decided to type in all the letters I could find, and then, since that didn't make a clear picture, to add in what I could find about the relationship between the Burtons and Gordon. Burton and Gordon were two of the most fascinating men of the Victorian age, and Lady Burton was herself remarkable. Sources: The Devil Drives: A Life of Sir Richard Burton , Fawn Brodie (W.W. Norton, 1967).

Extractions: Forget Indiana Jones. Forget James Bond. Forget Arnolds latest action hero incarnation. In the contest for greatest adventurer of all time, Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton wins hands down. He was the original British secret agent superstar. Danger wasnt his middle name: it was his dance partner. Richard F. Burton entered forbidden cities like he had the key to the front gate. He led a safari through the African jungle for the source of the Nile even though the heat, the fevers, and the delirium almost killed him. Once, a house collapsed on him because of a monsoon, and he came away with nothing more than a sprained ankle. He traveled all around the world, but yet still had time to write over fifty books, including translations of the Kama Sutra and seventeen volumes of the Arabian Nights. Burtons physical presence was imposing. He was six feet tall, and his face bore battle scars from a Somali spear that had entered through one of his cheeks and had gone out through the other. Western Europeans thought him exotic. They said he had gypsy looks or gypsy eyes, features that came in handy when Burton explored the dangerous world. He could blend in among native peoples: as an Arab trader, a Sufi dervish, or whatever struck his fancy. One of his contemporaries wrote that Burton was "Arab in his prominent cheekbones. He was gypsy in his terrible magnetic eyes the sullen eyes of a stinging serpent. He had a deep bronze complexion, a determined mouth, half-hidden by a black moustache which hung down in a peculiar fashion on both sides of his chin. His face had no actual beauty in it. It revealed a tremendous animalism, an air of repressed ferocity, a devilish fascination "
