Extractions: COMMUNITY RADIO: A "MOST APPEALING TOOL" FOR THE COMMONMAN From Frederick Noronha fred@bytesforall.org For over five decades, radio has been the "most appealing tool" for participatory communication and development. It "has always been the ideal medium for change", says a new book on how radio, the Internet and other technologies are helping the poor get a better grip over their lives. Titled 'Making Waves' this 352-page report focuses on how radio stations across the globe are making a difference, often to those who lack other means of communication. It also looks at how other tools are being used for this purpose including computers, the Internet, multimedia, threatre and video. But the largest number of case-studies deal with radio. Twenty experiences of unusual radio stations from across the globe are studied, while in two cases radio has been linked with the Internet, to widen its reach. Cases studied include the Radio Sutatenza in Colombia, set up in 1947, by a Catholic priest, to broadcast Christian doctrine to poor farmers and also teach skills that would help community development. Bolivia's network of miners' radio stations is called "one of the most outstanding examples of popular and participatory comunication in the world". At its peak, in the 1970s, the miners' radio network comprised as many as 26 independent stations.

Extractions: AFRICAN CULTURAL RESOURCES THE ARTS - FILM, LITERATURE, MUSIC, DANCE, MUSEUMS This section reflects African expression. In Africa, the interweaving of art and daily life is well documented. Cultural expressions thus include the plastic and performance arts, but also culinary and linguistic arts as well. A wide range of cultural resources pertaining to Africa have found their way to the American public. Many museums have long valued the rich artistic traditions of Africa in sculpture, weaving, pottery, architecture and other creative areas, and have become passionate promoters of new artists from the continent. Language traditions, culinary traditions, and traditional ways of thought also qualify as cultural representations. Indeed, culture is a very broad canvas on which many different types of expressions can merge. At its 37th and most recent conference in Lusaka, the Organization of African Unity was replaced by the African Union. Amara Essy, former foreign minister of the Ivory Coast, was elected secretary general of the new body, structured into a commission, a central bank and a parliament. "In this political union, Africa expects to find a far greater will to submerge itself historically, and also to coordinate actions and combine its means to tackle issues of much concern to the population, such as health, education, food and, of course, transportation and communications," Compaoré observed. Regarding his talks with Fidel Castro, who bade farewell to Compaoré at José Martí International Airport, he stated: "We exchanged ideas on issues of fundamental concern to the countries of the South in the historical context of globalization."
Kini And Adams The film was coproduced by entities in Burkina faso, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia, with Peoplein Europe should learn a little bit about our culture, he has said. http://spot.pcc.edu/~mdembrow/kini_and_adams.htm
Extractions: KINI AND ADAMS (1997, Zimbabwe/Burkina Faso, 93 min.), directed by Idrissa Ouedraogo; screenplay by Ouedraogo, Santiago Amigorena, and Olivier Lorelle; cinematography by Jean-Paul Meurisse; music by Wally Badarou; with Vusi Kunene (Kini), David Mohloki (Adams), Nthati Moshesh (Aida), John Kani (Ben), Netsayi Chigwendere (Binja), Fidelis Cheza (Tapera), In English with French subtitles. The Festival committee is proud to open this year's series with our fourth film by Burkinabe director Idrissa Ouedraogo. The film is set in a remote, impoverished area in Zimbabwe (the film was actually shot just a few miles from the capital city of Harare), a region of dry fields and huge granite rocks, where people try to scrape a living out of the thin soil. Yet the land has its own stunning beauty (beautifully photographed by Jean-Paul Meurisse under Ouedraogo's direction), just as the inhabitants have dreams that supersede their poverty, and they have vital, volatile human relationships. Kini has a loving family life with his wife Aida and daughter Bongi, but equally important to him is his friendship with Adams, a confirmed bachelor and dreamer. They have somehow acquired the carcass of an automobile, and the two men spend their days and nights tinkering with it. They have plenty of skill and ingenuity, but little in the way of resources to use to purchase the parts that would actually make the thing run. This does not stop them from spending long hours together, telling each other stories and dirty jokes, weaving their plans of moving to the city, becoming taxi drivers, and living a life of comfort and sophistication. Aida becomes increasingly unhappy with her husband's crazy scheme, which keeps him away from home so much.

Extractions: Headlines Viewpoints Apologetics EXTRA! ... Apologetics American Troops Sent to Ivory Coast to Protect Children Written by Mark Klusener Sending the troops is answered prayer for James Forlines, director of the Free Will Baptist Foreign Missions, which lobbied the Bush administration to send troops to the International Christian Academy in the central city of Bouake after its walls were breached by rebels. There were reports of shooting between rebels and government troops on the school grounds, but no indication that the rebels have targeted the children or school staff. The children at the school range in age from 5 to 18 years old. Some 200 foreigners are using the school as a refuge from the civil war, which rages around it. Children of American missionaries populate the school. The U.S. European Command moved forces to the Ivory Coast at the request of the U.S. ambassador there, who reported that the fighting was worsening around the school grounds. Rebel soldiers claim to have repelled an attack by government troops sent to crush an uprising that has plunged the West African country into its worst crisis since it won independence from France in 1960. School Manager Michel Cousineau said the children had been quickly moved from the dining room to six dormitories.
