Bulgaria's literacy rate is greater than 98 percent, considerably higher than that in the U.S. With the political reforms of the last several years has come educational reform as well, and the entire educational system from primary school through graduate school is being reconstituted along Western lines. The Ministry of Education has overall responsibility for maintaining standards and prescribing curricula for all public schools and any private educational institution qualified to offer a large variety of educational choices ranging from vocational programs (often closely associated with factories) to special science and math high schools. Foreign-language high schools are also very popular, which like the math and science schools, are "entrance by examination" institutions. Bulgaria has 43 universities and other institutes of higher education and 45 colleges and technical schools. ("College" refers to semi-higher-learning institutions for nursing, paramedical training, teaching, and technical education.) A new feature on the Bulgarian educational scene is the recently (re)established private schools, which receive no financial support from the state budget. Most notable among these is the American University of Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad, an American liberal arts college with a strong business school.

RFE/RL correspondent Askold Krushelnycky talked about the finds with one of Bulgaria's leading archaeologists. Sofia, 4 December 2000 (RFE/RL) Over the course of the past summer, two separate sites in southern Bulgaria were opened up to rich archeological finds. Experts believe that they will shed light on a period when Thracian civilization which began around the beginning of the first millennium BC was at its peak in the fourth and fifth centuries BC, the time from which the newly discovered sites date. The former Thracian civilization was bounded to the north by the Danube, to the east by the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and to the south by the Aegean Sea. About two-thirds of the former empire now lies on territory belonging to Bulgaria, with the remainder in European Turkey, including the Gallipoli peninsula, and the Greek province of Thrace.

The characters are larger than life - epic heroes, warrior women and beguiling beings who inhabit a magical landscape that has its own reality, laws and logic. They are many-layered and reveal some very ancient roots, perhaps going back to Thracian times and beyond. The samodivi, the fierce, enchanting nymphs of the forests and the waters who can call down the moon and ride wild deer with bow in hand, reflect some aspects of the great Thracian goddess, Bendis. The medieval hero Krali Marko is overlaid with an earlier mythology possibly extending as far back as the Thracian Horseman god who dispensed both life and death. And stories of animals that are human and humans that are animals may derive from an even earlier time.
