Extractions: A Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures About Brunei Abode of Peace is the literal translation of Brunei Darussalam. Brunei is located on the north-west coast of exotic Borneo, surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, and on the west, by the South China Sea. Brunei is divided into four districts, Brunei-Muara, Temburong, Tutong and Belait. The country consists of 5,765 sq km of land, most of which is still covered by rich tropical rainforest. Of this, the majority is still untouched primary jungle which hosts a large variety of flora and fauna. History Once called Poli or Puni by sixth century Chinese historians, Bruneis exposure to Islam started as far back as the 5th century. Bruneis empire once extended throughout Borneo, the southern parts of the Philippines and parts of Indonesia. When European influence spread throughout the region, Bruneis territory and power declined. In 1906 Brunei became a British protectorate and the British Resident became an adviser to the Sultan on all matters except Islamic affairs and Malay customs. In 1959, the Anglo-Brunei Treaty was signed and this gave Brunei its first constitution. In 1979, both countries signed a treaty of friendship and co-operation, paving the way for full independence in 1984. Membership of the UN, the British Commonwealth, ASEAN, and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) quickly followed.
Extractions: Kingdom and Culture Brunei is a nation without equal. Governed by the longest serving family Monarchy in the world, and financially secure because of it's oil and gas resources, Brunei is politically and financially stable. With Malay, Borneo native and Chinese traditions, a benevolent monarch, assimilation of modern technologies, an international outlook and Islamic religion at it's foundations, Brunei is a unique cultural and lifestyle experience. Located on equatorial Borneo, at the geographic heart of Asia, Brunei's history and culture is intriguing, dynamic and an integral part in the evolution of modern Asia. Brunei has preserved much of this history in in it's museums and monuments. Our tours to the museums, Royal Regalia and other attractions help bring this alive. Compact and uncongested, touring Brunei is easy. Destinations are close because of well developed road networks. Traffic is minimal, and we use boats for some tours; boats have been the transport standard for hundreds of years. Brunei has been changing rapidly since the mid 1970's, when the nation became a half owner in it's previously foreign owned oil and gas industry, and its income suddenly increased. In 1984, Brunei re-took full control of it's government administration from the British protectorate status that had helped preserve it's national integrity through the tumultuous earlier period of the 20th century.

Extractions: Student Text Page Early influence. Millennia ago, the lush tropical islands of Southeast Asia were populated by Malays and other peoples who became skilled in cultivation (tea, spices, rice) and handcrafts East meets West. When European merchant ships first arrived (1521), Brunei controlled most of Borneo, many nearby islands, and part of the Philippines. But this empire did not last. Dazzled by the region's resources, Dutch, French, and British traders urged their governments to colonize (or otherwise control) Southeast Asia. And while Brunei never became a colony, it lost much territory. Brunei did become a British protectorate in 1888. But in 1959, it proclaimed its right to govern itself under a new constitution. And in 1984, it regained full independence. Independence. And now.... Still, there's reason for concern. The country's fossil fuels may run out in 20 years. To offset that loss, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's government works hard to diversify the economy by promoting other industries, such as eco-tourism and international financial services. But that presents a challenge, too. Service industries involve one-to-one interactions with people all over the world. And Brunei's leaders worry about the impact that this aspect of globalization could have on their kingdom's cultural traditions.

The conduct of state affairs rests primarily on the basis of the constitution, law and legislation and an independent judiciary. "Brunei has a long history which stretches 600 years back to the first Sultan. Its civil service has functioned since then even though not in the current form that we see today. The modern civil service began after the Second World War. However, I will concentrate on the civil service as it is today which began with the independence of Brunei Darussalam on 23rd February 1984 and the introduction of a ministerial system of government. "The supreme executive authority of the government of Brunei is vested in His Majesty both as the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan and as Prime Minister, while administratively the executive functions of the Government are carried out by ministries and departments. Ministers head the ministries appointed by His Majesty. The number of ministries is 12 and some ministers head more than one ministry. Permanent Secretaries act as Chief Executive Officers of the ministries. Ministries have one or two Permanent Secretaries with the exception of the Prime Minister's Office. The Prime Minister's Office has 4 Permanent Secretaries. These are in turn assisted by Director-Generals, Directors and Heads of Departments.
