    Extractions: The Arthurian Legend Although there are innumerable variations of the Arthurian legend, the basic story has remained the same. Arthur was the illegitimate son of Uther Pendragon, king of Britain, and Igraine, the wife of Gorlois of Cornwall. After the death of Uther, Arthur, who had been reared in secrecy, won acknowledgment as king of Britain by successfully withdrawing a sword from a stone. Merlin , the court magician, then revealed the new king's parentage. Arthur, reigning in his court at Camelot, proved to be a noble king and a mighty warrior. He was the possessor of the miraculous sword Excalibur, given to him by the mysterious Lady of the Lake At Arthur's death Sir Bedivere threw Excalibur into the lake; a hand rose from the water, caught the sword, and disappeared. Another sword, sometimes mistakenly identified with Excalibur, was drawn from a stone by Arthur to prove his royalty. Of Arthur's several enemies, the most treacherous were his sister Morgan le Fay and his nephew Mordred. Morgan le Fay was usually represented as an evil sorceress, scheming to win Arthur's throne for herself and her lover. Mordred (or Modred) was variously Arthur's nephew or his son by his sister Morgawse. He seized Arthur's throne during the king's absence. Later he was slain in battle by Arthur, but not before he had fatally wounded the king. Arthur was borne away to the isle of Avalon , where it was expected that he would be healed of his wounds and that he would someday return to his people.

He was placed under the care his paternal great aunt and grew up at the nunnery where she was abbess. Upon reaching adulthood, his father knighted him and took him to Camelot At the Royal Court, Galahad sat in the “Siege Perilous” - the seat reserved by God for the purest of knights - yet no calamity befell him. Like Arthur had done so many years before, he then drew a sword from a stone which bore a message declaring him to be the World’s best knight! He was immediately welcomed to the Order of the Round Table and was present at the vision of the Grail , when he was chosen as one of those to seek this holiest of relics. They were, however, rescued by Seraide, High-Priestess of the Lady of the Lake, to whom she entrusted their care. They were thus brought up with their cousin Lancelot. Bors travelled to King Arthur's court with Lancelot. Along with Gawain and Bedivere , he acted as a messenger between King Arthur and his Imperial Roman enemy, Lucius. Subsequently becoming a central figure in the King's European campaigns as Arthur's personal guard. He became a great warrior, wielding Duke Galeholt's sword and easily recognized by a distinctive scar on his forehead. Sir Bors came to the attention of the daughter of King Brandegoris of Stranggore who desired to be the centre of his attentions. Although he was an avowed chaste Knight of the Round Table, she conspired with her nurse to have him pleasure her. With the aid of a magic ring, the lady's servant enchanted Bors into making love to the princess and, as a result, he became the father of Helain le Blank. Despite this indiscretion, Bors' purity enabled him to become an important Grail seeker. During his quest, Bors stayed at the castle of King Amans and championed his younger daughter. He was living an austere life at the time, eating only bread and water and sleeping on the floor. During the night, he had two dreams showing him the choices he would face the following day. Should he save his brother, Lionel, from captivity and torture or a virgin from deflowerment? Should he make love to a temptress or allow her and her maidservant to jump from their tower? He chose the latter option in each case. Lionel was not happy at being abandoned by his brother and later attacked him in a blazing rage. Bors refused to defend himself, but a hermit was killed when he tried to intervene and Bors was forced to take up his weapon. A column of fire from Heaven finally stopped the fight.     Extractions: Im not a huge fan of Medieval literature, and perhaps this book is to blame. I think Ive been spoiled by the Norton and Bevington anthologies Ive used in other classes, because this was truly a let-down. If youre a prof looking for a good book to use for class, have your students spend the extra twenty-spot and get a Norton.
