The Fort Langley Historical Site THE BEGINNING Historically the functional Fort Langley had a relatively short life. From beginning to end it lasted some 60 years. The original structure was built by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1827. Due to circumstances resulting from an agreement with the Russian American (Fur) Company more emphasis was placed on the farming operation and the Fort was rebuilt 4 kilometers upstream (east) in 1839. Shortly thereafter it burned down and was rebuilt again in 1840. PERIOD OF GROWTH Subsequently Fort Langley entered a period of dramatic growth in economic activity that confirmed its importance politically and geographically. The establishment of the 49th parallel as the international boundary with the US added to its official lustre.

The province is vast - 1,300 km long, (north-south) and 700 km wide (east-west), and is nearly four times the size of Great Britain. There are numerous mountain ranges, including the Coast Mountains, which include the highest peaks in Canada and stretch uninterrupted from Vancouver north to the Alaska border; and the famous Rockies that extend along the eastern border of the province. Dotted throughout these glacial peaks are alpine lakes, their waters such vivid hues of vermilion and turquoise they appear surreal. Hundreds of inlets and fjords pierce the Coast Mountains, creating cruising waters unlike any others.

Extractions: The Land British Columbia is Canada's westernmost province and one of North America's most mountainous regions. B.C. is bordered by the province of Alberta, the Yukon Territory and several U.S. states, including Alaska. Given its location, British Columbia is a gateway to the Pacific and Asia. Sometimes simply categorized as part of Canada's "West," the province is actually a distinct region both geographically and culturally. The variety of its landscape is the main reason for B.C.'s distinctiveness: its 947 800 km2 offer remarkable topographical contrasts. Where the Pacific Ocean reaches the continent, it meets a chain of islands, large and small, running from north to south. Some of these islands are nestled in fiords carved in the majestic Coastal Mountains, which rise more than 2000 m above sea level. To the east of the Coastal Mountains lies a rolling upland of forests, natural grasslands and lakes. Farther east, the Rocky Mountains (with peaks more than 4000 m high) separate B.C. from neighbouring Alberta. In the north, a small corner of the province is occupied by the Great Plains.

Extractions: The 1937 Programme of Studies for Character Education was part of the curriculum guide put out by the Department of Education in British Columbia. It was intended to set the standards for character education in junior high and senior high schools throughout the province. Teachers were responsible for reading and implementing the guidelines put forth in this particular document. The following is a commentary of the 1937 Programme. According to the 1937 Programme, the development of good character in students was the 'ultimate goal' of educators. The progress of the student's moral composition was to be a collective effort, with the student developing under the guidance and encouragement of both their home and school, involving their teachers, principal, family, and classmates. Yet ultimately the responsibility lay in the student's own abilities to make the right decisions, to give service willingly, and to acquire and practice "habits of right conduct." Character was to be considered in all aspects of the curriculum with the clear objective of improving the student's morals. This included the subjects of health and physical education, mathematics, music, art, home economics, science, and even the relatively new sex education, to name a just a few. Character was also to be a proactive element of the student's education. Considering the problems we are facing today, in an effort to prevent 'environmental genocide,' the 1937 curriculum was rather avant-garde in its promotion of conservation of natural resources. Tackling problems with an unprejudiced mind was another feature of the new ideals in character education.

Extractions: Detail of B-01172 It has been difficult to know what women's lives have been like in the past because of the scarcity of records kept by women. Since the records we commonly use to examine history are records created by men in the course of their daily work, it is usually through records created by brothers, sons, fathers and husbands, that we know what women's lives may have been like. Not only has learning about women in the past been difficult because of the rarity of sources, historians until the 1970s were not particularly interested in the study of women. Before this time when historians wrote about women it was usually only the exceptional and extraordinary women who merited examination. During the last thirty years, academics have begun to write about more ordinary women and their lives. The exploration of how women's culture has changed over time has revolutionized not only how we see women's roles in the past but also how we assess the past generally. Margaret Conrad describes some of the issues in writing women's history "...we are looking at fundamental questions of sources and methodology. For example, when approaching history from a woman's vision, the question becomes not 'Why are women marginalized in the early trade movement?' but 'What are the essential features of working class women's lives?'. Not 'Why have women been relegated to the private sphere in industrial societies?' but 'How has women's sphere been transformed by the emergence of industrial society?'. The answer to questions such as these will allow us to transcend the less ambitious queries and lay the foundation for a genuine human history."

Given its location, British Columbia is known as the gateway to the Pacific and Asia. Sometimes simply categorized as part of Canada's "West", the province is actually a distinct region, both geographically and culturally. The Aboriginal peoples of British Columbia developed one of the richest and most complex cultures north of Mexico. The coastal inhabitants were experts at wood sculpture and famous for their skill and courage in whaling. It was not until 1774 that the first Europeans, Spaniards, visited what is now British Columbia. The first permanent colony was established by the British in 1843. When gold was discovered in the lower Fraser Valley in 1857, thousands of people came in search of instant wealth. The promise of a rail link between the Pacific coast and the rest of the country convinced British Columbia to join the Confederation of Canada in 1871.
