As a result of pressure from the mining industry, government is considering deleting or reducing this spectacular park just 150 km north of Whistler. A year ago, B.C.'s longest standing conservation dream was finally realized. A Cabinet order protected Spruce Lake and the Southern Chilcotin Mountains just north of the Bridge River. Other areas of environmental and recreation significance in the Lillooet Forest District were agreed on and put forward by the Land and Resource Planning table for further government decision. Spruce Lake protected area is now in jeopardy. B.C.'s new government had no sooner taken office than it launched a review of the 6-year-long land use planning process that led to Spruce Lake protected area. That review is about to culminate, possibly in a decision to delete or reduce Spruce Lake protected area. In addition, protected areas agreed to by the members of the planning table are at risk of not being established.

The South Chilcotins must remain a Provincial Park as designated by the Order in Council. We need your help urgently! If a decision is made to reverse the protected area designation for the Southern Chilcotins, it will likely happen in the next few weeks. Please write to the Government, urging them to uphold the decision of the land use table, and that the planning process should continue to Phase 2 without delay. "Your government deeply regrets the mistakes that were made by governments of every political stripe over the course of our province's history," Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo said in a speech on Tuesday. "Errors have been made in the past," the speech said. "Our institutions have failed aboriginal people across our province." The apology came in the government's "throne speech," in which the governing Liberal Party outlined its upcoming legislative agenda. Last year, the government held a provincewide referendum on treaty negotiations that was soundly criticized by Indians as an attempt by the majority to impose its views on a minority. The government said the referendum was its attempt to kickstart a stalled treaty negotiation process that had cost millions and had yet to result in a single settlement.

The report card issued by the groups, and an accompanying fact-based website - BCFacts.org provide a detailed examination of the governments record on environmental stewardship. "The record is dismal. In fact, it amounts to nothing less than a dismantling of the environmental standards and safeguards that British Columbians have put in place," said Vicky Husband, Conservation Chair of the Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter. "A close look at what the BC Liberal government has done will shock the public." The report card and website reveal, for instance, that British Columbia is the only province in Canada to roll back drinking water standards since the Walkerton tragedy in May 2000. "Premier Gordon Campbell said his government would be open and transparent," said Jim Fulton, Executive Director of the David Suzuki Foundation. "Instead, they have changed important regulations without public consultation, and the way they are ramming environmental legislation through now is what you would expect from a tin-pot dictatorship." British Columbians have consistently ranked the environment as a high priority. The conservation groups encourage British Columbians to visit the website to learn about the radical changes the government has enacted in the last two years in order to determine if their concerns about the environment are being taken into account.

"The B.C. government's draconian approach will hurt thousands of students who will witness school closures, an increase in the size of their classes and some of their teachers being laid off," says CTF President Doug Willard. Neil Worboys, President of the British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF) adds: "Our members have had a legislative onslaught on their bargaining rights including limitations on the right to strike and a reduced scope of conditions that can be bargained. The loss of bargaining rights will also result in a shift in the relationship balance in schools between teachers and management. Teachers are more vulnerable to arbitrary actions by administrators." The B.C. government measures are expected to force 57 schools to close their doors, to lay off approximately 1,500 teachers and to strip away the bargaining rights of those who will remain.

Extractions: October 26, 2000 Four coastal British Columbia (Canada) forest product companies that agreed this past spring to an 18-month moratorium on timber harvesting in the area in exchange for a similar standstill in marketing campaigns against them by four environmental groups, say they welcome British Columbia Premier Ujjal Dosanghs call earlier this week for a coordinated strategy to address international concerns regarding BC forest practices and products. The four forest product companies involved in the Coast Forest Conservation Initiative (CFCI) are Canadian Forest Products, Fletcher Challenge Canada, Western Forest Products, and Weyerhaeuser. The four environmental groups are the Sierra Club of British Columbia, the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), the Coastal Rainforest Coalition (CRC), and Greenpeace. However, also earlier this week, the four forest products companies reported that Greenpeace had reopened its campaign in violation of the peace pact, but that the initiative would be continued regardless of this development (see Forest companies to go forward with BC initiative with or without Greenpeace). Greenpeace reportedly reopened its campaign via a letter it sent to German papermakers and publishers, as noted in a joint release by the forest products companies, A July article in Pulp and Paper Online (see Forest product companies, environmental groups to co-sponsor B.C. ecosystem initiative) reported that the four companies and four environmental groups were co-sponsoring work on development of an unprecedented proposal for a conservation-based ecosystem approach to temperate rainforests on the Central and North Coast of British Columbia.
