He was born in Washington, D.C. and has lived in Tennessee, Georgia, New York, Montana, Illinois, and British Columbia. He received a B.A. in Anthropology and English from Illinois State University (1997), an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Kansas (1999), and a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Kansas (2002). For a comprehensive CV , click here. Larsen taught courses in both anthropology and geography before coming to Georgia Southern. He was an undergraduate teaching assistant for Cultures of the World and Introduction to Archaeology at Illinois State University (1996), and he taught Introduction to Cultural Anthropology at Ottawa University (1999). As a graduate student at the University of Kansas, he was the sole instructor for World Regional Geography and Introduction to Physical Geography (2000-01). In addition, Larsen has conducted workshops in ethnobotany and cognitive mapping for the Cheslatta T'en First Nation in Burns Lake, British Columbia. At Georgia Southern, he covers a portion of the human geography courses, including World Regional Geography, Economic Geography, Cultural Geography, Geography of Asia, Introduction to Human Geography, and Introduction to Research.

    Extractions: By Dane Lanken S OME WITNESSES TO THE CONFLAGRATION during British Columbia’s recent summer of fire said the flames from burning forests were so big, so intense, so fearsome that they imagined it was what the gates of hell look like. Certainly in this NASA satellite image of a large swath of Western Canada and the adjacent United States, hell seems to have broken free of the underworld: scores of open fires, vast palls of smoke. And on the ground, people anxious, afraid, often destitute. Even the angels of the occasion, the firefighters, for all their skill and determination, were sometimes powerless in the face of endless tracts of tinder-dry forest, quick-shifting winds, rugged terrain and skies that fired down bolts of incendiary lightning but little or no rain. The Canada-U.S. border runs horizontally about midway through this big image, recorded August 21. The Rocky Mountains descend slightly diagonally through the centre, capped by the Continental Divide and the B.C.-Alberta border. The smaller image was snapped September 2. It shows the City of Kelowna, scene of the fire that began in Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park, which is that angry-pink bump poking into Okanagan Lake. With hundreds of homes lost and thousands of people displaced, it was the most destructive of the summer’s countless blazes.

Dept. of Geography Title: Department of Geography fonds Dates: Physical desc.: 1.05 m of textual records Bio/Admin History: The Dept. of Geology and Mineralogy was one of the original departments of the University of British Columbia. In 1922/23, the name was changed to Geology and Geography. In 1953, the informal administrative arrangements, which had existed for several years, were made official with the department being separated into two divisions in the Faculty of Arts and Science. The Dept. of Geology and Geography was split in 1959. When the Faculty of Arts and Science was itself split in 1964, the Dept. of Geography was placed in the Faculty of Arts and the Dept. of Geology in the Faculty of Science. The Dept. of Geography has been headed by Lewis Robinson (1959-1968), John C. Chapman (1968-1974), Robert Smith (1975-1982), Olav Slaymaker (1982-1991), T.R. Oke (1992-1996), Graeme Wynn (1996-2002) and Michael Bovis (2002- ). Scope/Content: The fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, agenda, calendars and printed materials pertaining to the activities of the Department of Geography and its Head (1969-1986). The fonds also contains the Olav Slaymaker Sous-fonds (1975-1976).
